Sorry GWM, I respectfully disagree. I subscribe to "It takes a Village". The parents should provide love, direction, and focus for their children. The community should provide an education, a guarantee of health care for all, and physical facilites to enrich the growing up experience and develop a contributing member of the community.
I am a 68 year old GWM (Neither proud nor ashamed but it is simply who I am and always have been) on a limited income (I work for a non-profit), I have no children or grandchildren for whom I need to invest for the future. But that is part of my responsibility as a part of the community. I know that Rowan is suffering in this reception but the county has a future, NC has a great future. Why are people still swarming there when the unemployment is the 3rd highest in the country? They see what is coming, I see it, and Rowan should be ready for it.
I live in a community that builds parks and greenways in areas that cannot be developed; along creek banks and in flood plains. They include playgrounds, bike paths, and dog parks in these areas. Places that were littered with trash and were dumping grounds for garbage have become really beautiful. Yes, it costs tax money to develop and maintain but the quality of life is increased for everyone. It's a place where you can see the results of your tax money.
Good for you Janet! The lady of the house uses her card for everything she spends, food, clothes, utilities, taxes, etc.
She pays off the full balance every month and flies to San Jose to visit her son and his family every Thanksgiving on
the benefits from the card. If used wisely, a credit card can be very helpful. Some of us, unfortunately, believe in instant gratification and are prone to spending foolishly. I've found that a debit card controls my compulsion and serves my needs.
At last. I have no sympathy for the credit card issuers. They lure you in, encourage you to spend money, then when you have enough debt, they raise the interest rate. I was stupid. I played their game and when I reached around $40,000.00 in credit card debt, they all raised the interest to about 21%. I never missed a payment, never had an overdraft, and was never late. Maybe I should have declared bankruptcy and I could have, but I enjoyed spending the money and decided to seek help from a credit counciling company recommended by BB&T. They arranged lower interest rates from all of the creditors, some even dropped to 0% (Bank of America, Nordstroms, Saks). I appreciate those companies help. I paid everything off in four years @ $1,100. per month. I'm kinda proud of myself for getting through it. I even have a decent credit rating now. My only monthly payment is on a car loan and I am trying to pay it off 2 years early. Please everyone, use better judgement than I did.
Using a hand held cell phone while driving should be banned completely nationwide. No person driving a car needs to be distracted by talking on a phone. I'm guilty myself. I multitask often; I grew up watching TV and doing my homework. I surf the internet and the TV channels at the same time. But, no person can talk on the cell phone and give complete attention to what they and the other drivers are doing.
Good Afternoon,
I'm not opposed to the incentives; but I would like to have been a fly on the wall at their corporate meetings. Was it all a bluff? Would they have expanded in Salisbury regardless? Or am I just becoming a cynic in my old age?
This is a decent house with an unfortunate location. If it were a couple of blocks up the street, where the neighborhood is more cohesive, it might be worth the investment, but I cannot see it at this location where you have such a mish-mash of architecture, both residential and commercial. Restoration of this house would be just as expensive as the Sydney Blackmer home, but there, it would be worth the expense. I admire Salisbury for it's preservation efforts. The city has much that is worth preserving but restoration of this place is nearly hopeless;
let these people fix it up the most economical way so that the house will at least be useful.
<DIV>Yes dear, I was probably in the second grade at Wiley School when you were born.Your blogs don'tremind me of the old ladies I knew in Salisbury so I don't think you have anything to worry about. As long as you mind is open, you stay young.

Tell me about it! I went to my 50th high school reunion in Salisbury last year. I hadn't seen ANY of those people in all those years. They were so old! Some were still beautiful, some were still athletic, some were still recognizable, most had mellowed as they matured and were kinder and gentler than I remembered. I'm glad I went and perhaps a little sorry that I had not been to earlier reunions as many are no longer with us and I would have liked to have seen some of them again. I'm also glad that I had a good stiff martini before going in the banquet room as there was no cash bar.
I agree, although I sympathize with her for his betrayel, she should have just left himand not aired all this in public. It is tawdry.
