I'm beginning to see a pattern here...Obama proposes bad policy, public doesn't like it and turns its attention to Whitehouse's failures, Whitehouse attempts to divert public's attention by inventing a crisis. Sorry, America's smarter than that...watch as Obama's favorability continues to plumit.

Hey Walt,
I just wanted to let you know I finished Farnham's Freehold today. I thought it was pretty good. I definitely needed a break from the more serious non-fiction books I have been reading lately such as Liberty and Tyranny, Liberal Fascism, and Meltdown (all very good and educational by the way). The story line was quite a stretch, but I guess it's to be expected with Sci Fi. But it had some great underlying themes. I like your taste. You listed a couple other of Heinlein's books, which would you recommend most? I'd like to read another one of his books sometime in the near future. I'm now starting Hayek's Road to Serfdom. Meltdown got me interested in Austrian Economics and I've heard Hayek's book is a classic that is very applicable in our day. Anyway, thanks for the recommendations, and keep them coming if you have more. I'm on a quest to make up for the many years of missed reading because I was too absorbed in shallow, worthless, pop-culture nonsense. God speed.

I know it's difficult for liberals to understand because it requires thinking, but lowering taxes actually increases revenue. Lower taxes stimulates an economy and the increased growth offsets the lower tax rates. The result is more money for the government. Ronald Reagan proved this theory when he lowered the highest tax bracket from 70% to 28% and government increased their revenues over that amount of time. Unfortunately, that doesn't punish the rich for being successful, and it's inconsistent with redistribution of wealth policies, so Obama would never consider such an approach.

Jake,
You're absolutely right. There is no direction to any movement right now. I thought something was starting with this and the tea party thing, but it seems to be falling apart quickly. I wonder what, if anything will be happening on the 4th of July.
As far as our discussion earlier about project X - i honestly thought that part of the book was a pretty big stretch, but I think it was symbolic of how a government must take measures to keep their people oppressed in order to maintain a dictatorship. I would never see anything like that happening here. Despite the widespread apathy, Americans overall are a freedom loving people, and I believe that they would stand up before it got as far as it did in the book. However, if history teaches us anything, it's to never underestimate the evils that men are capable of. I imagine that if you asked any German in the early 1900's whether or not they believed their people would be responsible for widespread genocide of the Jews, they would say you were crazy and that would never happen.

Drwebb,
I liked your post. I'm glad you appreciate America for what it is, or at least was. Unfortunately, we are on the fast track to socialism right now, and things are changing for the worst at an unbelievable pace. My last name is also Webb. I am in medical school, so soon to be a doctor as well. What kind of doctor are you? Good luck in all your future endeavors.

Yeah, and don't forget that those jobs are an average salary of $72000 with benefits and a guaranteed 2% raise each year. While the private sector workers' wages are stagnant at best, gov employees continue to see increases. Unbelievable!

I just finished reading Liberal Fascism and this is right out of the fascist playbook. The end justifies the means. If the end goal is peace, utopia, harmony, etc. then it's ok to institute war, terrorism, etc. to achieve that goal. that book has opened my eyes to a lot of distorted ideologies of the left.

Although more people are losing their jobs, we should be thankful that the dems in congress are looking out for the little guy by passing a bill that forces employers give mandatory vacation time to all full and part time employees. Who and what inspired this wonderful peace of legislation? Why it was Representative Alan Grayson from FL while he was on a vacation in Disney World. Just listen to these inspired words... “Honestly, as much as I appreciate this job and as much as I enjoy it, the best days of my life are and always have been the days I’m on vacation.”

Hey you know, he's right. In fact let's just take this a step further and have the government force employers to pay for their employees to always be on vacation. Then their employees will always be happy. There's the solution to all our unemployment problems! I'm so glad our congressmen are looking out for the little guy.

hey Jake,
Sorry I still haven't responded to your last question. I think it's a good one and I've been thinking about it lately. However, I'm in the middle of finals right now so my focus is elsewhere for a little bit. I just didn't want you to think I was ignoring you. I'll catch up with you soon. God speed.

Your last reply didn't show up for some reason, but I just wanted to say great metaphor about the train going into the tunnel. Unfortunately we both know how that one ends.
