I don't think Starlight is evil for the sake of being evil. She has a goal and a purpose which she may believe to be the right cause or for the betterment of all. She may think her ideology is the only way to find true friendship. And she probably does think that, considering in the opener she said she 'created harmony' by making everypony equal.
However, Starlight's ideology benefits no one but herself. Other ponies should not have their personalities and destinies ripped away based on what one mare thinks is right.
I'm sure we'll discover Starlight's true motivations soon enough. =]
