Skimming that thing by Pinker was pretty painful. It's just the sort of pop "science" you'd expect from that guy, and the fact that he misspells Hobbes's name twice doesn't exactly help his case, which is based mostly on conjecture about murder rates 3000 years ago. But let's just accept the numbers for a minute. Even then we see his conclusion are based on percentages. So, murder as a percentage in the tiny population of ancient Europe was higher. Fair enough. The asserted fact, however, that the 61 million corpses produced during WWII were a relatively small number proportionally, would only show that thanks to the industrial revolution, people have been able to reproduce faster than murderers (both government and private) have been able to murder them. That 61 million figure doesn't even include all the genocides and non-war murder of the 20th century, and in either case, such numbers hardly warrant your attitude of "gee golly whiz, things sure are just getting better and better!"

I'm sure Gary would agree that there are other moral and ethical systems that also frown on thievery. The fact that he did not list them in a 1,000-word article is not a criticism of you.
