This looks like a great book--am going to pick it up. Thanks for the recommendation!

I've never learned Latin, and have no real advice, but I thought this five books interview a few months ago was fascinating.

I'm very sorry. My wife's parents are separating after 35 years of marriage and it's been very hard on everyone, especially when they packed up her childhood home. It's sort of like unraveling a very long tapestry--you hope that it's done gently and that the threads can be woven back together in a new way.

Congratulations! IME, it does take a bit for reality to coalesce around the news.

There's a sad scandal surrounding a lockpicking kit made by Schuyler Towne, who writes really interesting articles about the history of locks.

Onno Hoes might be the best aptonym I've seen anywhere.

I think that is so true. I think they will also rightly judge us for not doing more to prevent it when we could (or at least when it was conceivable). I already hold the boomers more to account for this than is probably fair.

We just ordered bedding from Room & Board. Hasn't arrived yet, but the blankets felt really soft and light in the store.

I'd say all of the above! On the whole, I wish I lived somewhere else (because I can never not see it as Politics Place), but there are some great parts, too. I've lived downtown (Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, and Mt. Pleasant), which cuts out the horrific commuting part and adds in access to Rock Creek Park, which is such a great part of the city. FWIW, there's a good group of Toasties here, too (though I haven't had a chance to meet up with them yet).
