No I don't agree that everybody has a right to health care. There's no right to heath care, there's no right to education, there are no rights for any of those things. Life, liberty, property.
Is it a moral good to treat the sick? Yes. Is it a right to get treated? No.
Mark, the Free State Project might be the closest thing on Earth to a Galt's Gulch right now. Google it.
Exactly. Why in the world is there one decision being made on this from the top down for the rest of the country? Let the people in 50 different States decide for themselves. The power starts with the States, who granted power to the Federal government. When did the Federal government (the creation of the States) get the power to tell the States (its' creators) what to do? It's madness.
Ron Paul without a doubt in the world.
Another way of saying it is look: Hamilton was wrong. A strong Federal government does not create a strong, happy, Union. It creates relative chaos - see the national debt and budget deficit. Jefferson was right, why don't we try him out for a change? We will all be better off!
It seems clear to me that this should be the number one issue, because all of the other issues flow from that. There is no 'one size fits all' policy for Americans, and there shouldn't be! That's why we have 50 States. The answer is in front of us. What does it take to have this become the dividing line in American political life? Does the GOP need to make this its rallying cry? Do we need a third party to simply show the existence of this real solution? Nothing is going to change until we have decentralization of power. Whether by restoring States' rights or a tax revolt, we need to cut off D.C.'s power supply as it reaches further and further into our lives!
We need a return to States' rights. All of the major domestic issues in American society today would be better solved if individual States were allowed to make their own rules to reflect the wishes of the people who lives there. Some States may legalize marijuana, while others may not. Some may legalize gay marriage, while some would not. Some would have social security programs and socialized health care, and some would not. The people who want X benefit or lifestyle would be free to move to that State. The role of the Federal government would be to protect the Union from foreign aggressors. With a full 50 States to choose from, there would be plenty of freedom, diversity and choice for all Americans. This is also something that Republicans and Democrats can rally around. WHY isn't anyone emphasizing this? We need to stop talking about particular policies on the Federal level - they are irrelevant! We need to elect politicians who will fight for States' rights and decentralization of power. That means, returning the power to local districts, to people! WHY aren't we pushing this? It solves the basic structural problem we face with one city (D.C.) controlling the fate and direction of 50 States. The craziest thing is, I didn't think of this idea! It was how America was envisioned in the first place! WHY aren't we talking about this more??

If the frontiers of science were able to be profitable to companies and thus improve our lives, those scientists would be hired by companies in various fields to develop technologies and innovations that the market (the people) want and need. Why would the government possibly be better at deciding which projects are worthy of grants and which projects are a waste of money? Everyone agrees that the country would be better off if we were on the cutting age of technology and innovation, the question is whether or not the private sector knows how to spend money on research and development better than the government. I, for one, am convinced that less money will be wasted in the private sector.
