sorry to copy paste, but I think it's a relevant comment given the situation; From The Last Bossman comment section:

"Kyle, with all due respect, I think you're quite wrong about Hashimoto. I think he knows very well that we want a full remake, because he's made lots of comments about how he is constantly asked about it over the years. In the past year, he's gotten more specific.

At Thai Comicon back in the spring of this year there was a Square Enix Confidential panel where he spoke about it again. He said he knew everyone wants a remake and he wants to treat that title more importantly, but first they have to finish XV. (If you watch the video, you can see how much frustration and exasperation he has in his voice as he closes his eyes and winces.) Then with the release of G Bike as a mobile app in September at a panel, he made reference to it again, saying that there was no plans for any right now but that he would "like to convince the company to do it."

As well, he and other brass at Square Enix, including Akitoshi Kawazu, who has worked on multiple Final Fantasy and SaGa games, the producer of the Bravely Default series (who always wanted to translate the game, but was initially told "no"), the leads on the Theatrhythm, Yoshi P who was behind a Realm Reborn, the producers and PR leads on Final Fantasy Explores, the Dragon Quest producers, and Tabata as well have repeated the same message in Square Enix's informal "Nintendo Direct"-like webcasts and other events: in order to convince their bosses to let fans have what they want, they need to constantly drum up hype and support. There was a ridiculous Twitter sweepstakes campaign the producers of Bravely Default ran to drum up support for the original Bravely Default's budget release because as the producer mentioned it sold over a million worldwide, but the upper brass still wants more. Isn't that ridiculous?

Now of course you would think this is not the way to do that and you might be right, but Hashimoto has also spoken of the need to develop derivative material again for FFVII in advance of a remake and this type of thing tends to convince the executives. This is likely part of his push internally to get the green light for the remake.

So I think what Hashimoto (and other Square Enix developers) are happy about now is that some of the games people have begged for are closer to realization are coming. (It's almost a lock a new SaGa game will be announced this Sunday, and Theatrhythm Dragon Quest was just announced, I know that's not important so much to overseas fans, but us Japanese who begged for them for years.)

It may not be connected to a Final Fantasy VII remake at this point, but clearly Hashimoto is either happy about something that happened recently or is putting on a brave face. He makes a lot of executive announcements, but his role is to sell projects to SE and make good on them.

They made him work as a cashier three years ago and he put on a smile for that too. Can you imagine? He has to put up with a lot of guff to get us the games we want, so let's cut him some slack."

perhaps they've optimized their engine and can output better quality textures, better lighting. That's really the only thing that I can think of outside of reworking all of their 3-D models so they have more polygons(which can be done since it's on Wii U when before it was first developed for XB360 and PS3 under THQ) .

I mean it must be a really big overhaul from what they showed us previously if it's “Looking Completely Different now”. Anyways with all of that extra time and funds graces from Nintendo, i wouldn't be all too surprised by the progress they've made reworking the game from the ground up for the Wii U.

I'm a big fan of Itagaki's games. Their action and animation are some of the most fluid and responsive from any game developer I've played. You just have to play a bit of Dead or Alive to know it. any other developer would have 3 second long animation when you push a button, with him the action is instantaneous, while keeping the visual choreography intact...
