I've never considered changing my surname when I marry, but it's still the default where I'm from for most women...and yet the process is very much not the default. It's baffling to me!

This comment reminded me of Pulp's "Common People":

Rent a flat above a shop,
Cut your hair and get a job.
Smoke some fags* and play some pool,
Pretend you never went to school.
But still you'll never get it right,
'Cause when you're laid in bed at night,
Watching roaches climb the wall,
If you called your Dad he could stop it all.

*in the non-North American-English sense meaning cigarettes, not the homophobic slur!

THIS. And as an Irish person, it consistently amazes me that more of the racists in Ireland don't have any idea that the rhetoric they spout could be taken verbatim from those in the US who were opposed to Irish immigration in the past.

(on the plus side, I love this reclamation and I adore this couple kthxbye: http://metro.co.uk/2016/08/25/couple-sell-more-bl...

THANK YOU.

/Irish person here. Many, many people have said to me they though Irish (Gaelic) bore the same relationship to Irish-English as Scots does to English. Alas, no. Totally different language.

Incidentally, 'cailleach' in Irish also means 'witch'.

Phil Lynott (Irish musician of Thin Lizzy fame) used to use the line at gigs (and I'm sure many Irishmen have used it since...):

"Are there any girls out there with a bit of Irish in them? Are there any girls out there who'd like a bit more Irish in them?"
