I won't apologize for those who have posted or will post in a hateful manner, no more than I would expect you to apologize for hate filled atheists.
People are people, regardless of their faith. However, what is done with that faith is the point.
As I said earlier about this, I just don't see the point of having something "official" from the government or some organization stating that you don't believe. What? Isn't their own word enough to be trustworthy? What if the group/gov't rejects their proclamation? Does that make them any less an atheist?
Again, I will defend their right to take a public stance and say "I don't believe in X, Y or Z..." - I just think that it a bit ridiculous as it seems you are trying to convince SOMEONE of something. Even if that someone is just themselves.
Its a personal decision that doesn't take a statement of believe to make it your way of life (and that pretty much applies to anything). (Barring of course the obvious - you can't just say "I am a doctor, etc ... you can say I am a nice person and then act upon that decision.)

Why do they feel the need to "de-baptise" themselves from a religion based on a god they do not believe in?
To put it in similar terms that atheist generally use:
Why aren't they just as equally signing a proclamation that they do not believe in any given fairy tale (Cinderella, Snow White, Rapunzel, etc.) as being factual?
Isn't that the common line? God is make believe and the Bible is just a good fairy tale?
I equate this action with signing a PUBLIC proclamation like "I, (the undersigned) do hereby publicly state that I refuse to acknowledge that Snow White is true. That Snow White and the 7 dwarves are fictional characters and is at best, a sroty left for bed time."
I mean ... really! Isn't that pretty much it summed up?
If that is what they want to do, I have no issue with them doing it. I just think it is about as stupid as saying what I just said.
Just because someone is a "free-thinker" doesn't mean that they have actually given what they do and believe in ... MUCH thought (And honestly, this has been the case in many conversations I have had with some. They didn't even realize that there are multiple versions of the big bang theory and have no clue what micro/macro evolution is and that there IS a difference. These people "walk in faith" as much as those whom they criticize.)
