Hey! There are marines.

Oh, I'm sure the point is that this is far more traffic than should normally be expected between the two star systems.

It may be "intended to bring capital into the Quadrant", but George is correct that it may have unintended consequences. "Any new startup" could be the intended Manticore money flowing in, or it could be the current wealthy class in the system cashing in their old interests and making a new, tax-free "startup". Basically, whenever you make a tax loophole, people will find ways to use it. And not always the people you expect.

By the way, I enjoy the little story about the bugs. It adds a very believable note of real character to the scene.

The thing is, there is no reason for the SLN to attack at all. None. Which is why Mesa is trying to manufacture one. But since Henke doesn't know Mesa is trying to manufacture one, why does she feel the need to fortify Tillerman? Something still seems just a bit off, as if Weber really wants to have a battle with a particular set of circumstances and he's trying a bit to hard to manufacture them.

Obviously both sides are wrong about their assessment of the strength of the other side -- the SLN because they don't understand the difference in striking power the RMN now has, and the RMN because they don't know they will really be dealing with 25 BCs rather than 17 (and they don't know about the Battle Fleet group nearby, either).

I still don't get why Tillerman is so important. The SLN fleet could just sail right past it, couldn't they? It doesn't seem like "closest to Monica" necessarily makes it "most likely target".

“We’ll carry out our duties, and we’ll ignore matters that have no bearing on those duties!”

Famous last words.... Well, OK, probably not last words. But you know that's not going to be how it works out.

Yeah, but she could leave her whole squadron there and it probably wouldn't be effective as a deterrant anyway. Byng seems to think the balance of power is such that one of his ships outnumbers several of hers, while she clearly thinks that a couple of her ships are worth 17 of his.

OK, thanks. That doesn't necessarily make it a primary target though, does it?

Probably just a nod to those who pick it up.
