I'm a little late to the game and don't remember which episode this really belongs to, but one of the things that stuck out to me most about this show was just how fucking haunting it was when objects and then people started disappearing from the loops. That shot of the party being deserted except for one person was truly terrifying in a way that a lot of "time loop" stories don't really capture. I'm having trouble thinking of a show that does so well with drama, comedy, and existential dread all at the same time.

I'm so sorry for your and Baize's family's loss, Mark--this feels so unreal and unfair. I'll be thinking of you, and I hope you take all the time that you need to get back to the place that you want to be. This community supports you and loves you.

I love how this episode plays with expectations. It knows exactly what you expect from Johan, and never quite gives it to you--he's just full of surprises.

This is a truly haunting final line, and I absolutely love it. I remember from the first time I saw this show that there are several episodes like this, or the one with Tenma and the small town doctor--episodes you might consider "monster of the week," for lack of the overall Johan plot. What I had forgotten was how devastatingly relevant they are to the story as a whole, and furthering the characters and themes. I love this show.

When I first saw this episode the Twin Peaks references went straight over my head. Now it's all I can think about.

"Dr. Tenma said tomorrow will be a great day!" is still a thing my wife and I say to each other sometimes. I love this episode.

Also, I feel like one thing that really sets Monster apart is how grounded it is in its setting. Maybe it's my lack of familiarity with Japan, but I can't think of many other series that seem to take place so clearly in the real world. It's neat.

I still cannot get over Eva literally dropping his ring in front of him. It's so unnecessarily cruel, but also completely appropriate and really just seals how much this sucks for Tenma.

Spoilers for the series as a whole:

This is one of my top three anime of all time, and I haven't watched the full thing since high school--I did rewatch some of it for this, though, and for another set of reaction videos, and I am so stoked that it holds up to what I remember. It's so very different from most anime I can think of--so much more grounded in the real world, so intense, so dark without being needlessly grimdark. It's also so well constructed, in terms of pacing and sound design and direction and everything.

How many other people here have seen the full series? On rewatch, I definitely have some questions and ideas I'd like to discuss.

Naoki Urasawa's Monster. I'll try to keep it high level and spoiler free, but this covers stuff that you'll learn over the first four or so episodes.
