There's no ETA for one.

There's no set release date for the official version of iOS 4.2.

Also, the ETA for the unlock only applies to 3G/3G[S] users ― the status of a new iPhone 4 unlock is currently unknown (and I apologize for causing any confusion).

An unlock will be out for 05.14.02 a few days after iOS 4.2 is officially released, so be patient until then, and be careful about updating to official firmwares in the future, because there's always a chance you could lose your unlock forever.

You have to jailbreak the device to unlock it, so you'll want to keep it that way. I also recommend saving SHSH blobs for 4.1 using TinyUmbrella ASAP.

As for the iPhone 4 unlock: there really isn't any ETA for it, so just be patient.

Cool, I have the power to make MuscleNerd actually post a comment. :P

I meant "this" as in the unlock that's coming soon. Unfortunately, you can't unlock your device just yet, but be patient, and the unlock will be out soon. :)

To everyone else: thank you for the warm welcome, and I'm glad you all take time out of your day to answer the questions of others.

If you want to update, I'd recommend only updating to 4.1, because Cydia is broken on 4.2 and tweaks & applications have a tendency to break when a major firmware update is released.

Also, always remember to save SHSH blobs moving forward, because you may find yourself wanting to downgrade or restore your device to an older firmware if you encounter any problems in the future.

To backup applications, just sync with iTunes and copy your App Store purchases over. As for preserving your Cydia apps: a quick Google search should help you find a guide that'll explain how to do so.

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to stop by and introduce myself. I'm Metriex (some of you may know me from Twitter as Metriex / ClaytonBraasch), the newest moderator here. :-) MuscleNerd and I had a talk, and I told him that lately I've seen a huge spike in negativity and duplicate questions, so my goal here is to assist users and clean up any issues that arise. He thought I'd be a good fit, so bam, here I am, haha.

Instead of writing a biography, I'd like to take a minute and clarify some things about the upcoming unlock:

1. This unlock will work with 05.14.02 (and likely the 4.2 baseband if it's updated) on the iPhone 3G/3G[S] when initially released. An iPhone 4 version may take a bit more time due to the process and steps involved, but I'm optimistic about seeing both 05.14.02 & 02.10.04 supported when the unlock is released. Either way, just be patient.

2. The release is scheduled for about 1-3 days after the official version of iOS 4.2 is released to the public, which should be before the end of November (I'd figure within the next two weeks, but hey, I could be wrong). Again, be patient ― MuscleNerd and company are working on it so it'll be ready right away.

I hope that cleared a few things up, and I look forward to working with you all and making the blog a fun place to share and receive help for everyone!
