I enjoyed the language, not having such an in-depth knowledge of Anglo-Saxon. (I took some courses in grad school.) I think being an actual Anglo-Saxonist probably makes it more annoying. I would say, also, that for someone who knows NO Anglo-Saxon, the language is likely to be at the outer limit of comprehension without some painful immersion. My boyfriend was unable to decode it until I read him some out loud.

I can see Kingsnorth's point about the swearing, also, because we tend to find alternate, unfamiliar swears cute in a way we don't find someone saying CUNT constantly at all cute.

My problem with the novel, in fact, was how repulsive the main character was. I quit early because of that. He's awful.

Here is a terrible thing to distract everyone from the more terrible things. Yes it's what the link text says! Boyfriend gave away her and her mom's Hamilton tickets.

I'm 100% empty on Orlando. There is nothing to say yet. Eventually I'll give some people some money in a hopeless kind of way.

Unrelatedly: people think Meghan Trainor sounds black? What? She is like the whitest-sounding white girl on my daughter's pop station.

edit--OK, I read the piece and apparently I don't recognize when linguistic features of Black English are being appropriated anymore. Maybe too old. But maybe it happens too fast now. It's an interesting question whether even Trainor knows that she is doing that.

Hmm, I guess you're right. Still weirdly non-evident.

Also WHY DOES NO ONE MENTION SHE IS THE FIRST FEMALE COP when she is? Just that she's the first bunny cop. Even the police receptionist is a guy.

Mallory's answer was brilliant, though, because it's so easy to get sidetracked by "horribly insensitive timing" issues when discussing divorces, when the timing isn't really the point.

He sounds like an utter louse, mind you.
