Seems odd that out of all of the houses on and above the lake, including some in Manchester proper, he is the ONLY person looking for a bail out. He could hire an engineer to come out, do a study, and determine the safety of the foundation. He could also jack up the house, tear out the foundation, and pour a new one. Expensive? Yes. But probably doable for about the $41,000 he was willing to forfeit so the county didn't have to come up with their share of the buyout. I think the county made the right decision.
Request denied!! Alliant sold off their transmission lines to ITC, because it was supposed to lower their operating costs. Turns out that is not the case (DUH!). Tough rocks.
Can't wait to ride from Marion all the way to the Cedar Valley Trail. This will be a key link when it is complete.
Increases property values for adjacent property, enhances tourism, equipment sales, just to name a few.
Bever Park is NOT included. No bow hunting within the city limits is allowed on parks, city owned land, or commercial property. Its right in the rule book.
A lot more people want this trail than the few who oppose it. I would love to have a trail running through my back yard. I miss being close to the Sac and Fox trail where I could ride my bike there easily. Trails are a proven economic and social enhancement for any area. I willing to bet lunch that most of the naysayers will change their mind after its open.
I'll toss in $100 toward reconstruction.
A lot of short sighted comments as usual. This flood is no different that the one that swamped Cedar Rapids or Ames. I don't see anyone suggesting the victims of those floods be denied tax dollars. In fact, Cedar Rapids passed a special tax just to compensate flood victims. Now Cedar Rapids is requesting funding from the federal government to build flood walls to protect PRIVATE property within the downtown district. Maybe I don't want my tax dollars going to protect houses on the west side, and business on the east side. But no, that would be short sighted as well.
The fact remains that the properties around Lake Delhi generate 10-15% of the tax revenue for Delaware county, and without that tax base school board officials have already stated that the Maquoketa Valley High School in Delhi ( the town) would be in serious trouble. Its the same argument for why we can't simply abandon downtown Cedar Rapids. That tax base is too important to the city and the county.
Except that the third gate was partially open, and the other two where opened beyond the design limits of the dam.
No one has proven why the dam failed. That engineering report is due later this year.
