Incidentally, the US did NOT leave Vietnam because of the Tet Offensive. They remained in force for three more years and beefed up the Saigon Army.

What else could they have done? They had already committed 540,000 US troops and the Pacific Fleet. How many more years should that kind of deployment have gone on?

They DID give it a very good crack even after Tet, but in the end the Saigon Army could not handle the North Vietnamese. That is the truth about the Vietnam War.

For the US to hold the line they would have been engaged in DECADES of futile war.

Would it have been worth it?

That's why Cronkie was actually WRONG: in fact, even in 1968 it was clear the Communists had WON..

If the Americans lost the Vietnam War because of a comment by one news presenter, let's face it: they weren't going to win anyway.

JIANPING XU:

More bad news for China: the Han Chinese numbers are going to fall drastically in the next couple of generations, because of the one-child policy.

The Han will soon become a population of the old, with relatively few young people.

China's Muslim minority, by contrast, will expand hugely in proportion to the Han, because they have never been subject to the one-child policy.

So China will be tied down trying to control an increasingly big and angry Muslim minority.

JIANPING XU:

China WILL NOT rule the world.

It is big, but other big countries will gang up to prevent its dominance.

An anti-China alliance of the US plus Japan plus India plus Vietnam plus Korea plus Indonesia plus Russia plus the European countries, is more than enough to keep China down.

China has too many enemies.

LORI:

If the rich eat better, have better houses or send their children to better schools, it doesn't necessarily follow that the poor suffer from this inequality.

Indeed, they may GAIN from it, because these spending habits of the rich could create jobs.

But if the poor are unable to afford hospital treatment because hospitals are private, that is a matter of life and death. So the rich having private medical care can deprive the poor.

That is why, dear fellow, we have state medical care in Canada.

Geddit?

"And that is why Canada has state run health care", I meant to say in the last sentence of my last message.

LORI:

You say:

"But in Canada, it is AGAINST THE LAW to use your money, to sacrifice, to make a choice to spend money to save your own life, or that of the ones you love. We are forced into the government system, to queue up, and take our chances with the great unwashed. "

Thank you so much ! You have set out the beautiful rationale of the Canadian social security system splendidly.

The Canadians are right.

Health is too important . It is a matter of life and death and bankruptcy. It is NOT like food or shelter (as you falsely claim) because in a rich country like Canada everone has some kind of food or shelter (if theywant it).

But failure of health can hit the rich EXACTLY as it can the poor. Any of us can get cancer or a heart-attack. So HEALTH CARE has to be rationed, unlike food and education and shelter. And that is Canada has state-run health care.

By the way, is "nationalisation of your body" as Steyn puts it - worse than selling it to some insurance shark?

And how does having a state-funded medical system "nationalise" your body? Aren't you just taking your readers for suckers, Steyn? Does having a government-funded road system "nationalise" your car? Does having a government-funded sewage system "nationlise" your alimentary canal?

Come off it, Steyn !!!! Try some other cheapo stunt next time.

FELOW CANADIAN and WUTANG:

I hugely enjoyed your postings showing what a clown this Steyn is. Had me laughing out loud.

That's the way to deal with him.

Answer a fool according to his folly, as the Bible says.

And give us a break on that oh-why-do-they -leave--Canda jeer, Steyn.

Plenty of Brits leave Britain for Australia because they dislike the British weather.

Quite a few Australians come to Britain because it has more people and they want to be part of a bigger society.

Similar pulls could be operating in Canada. Not all who choose the US hate Canada.

Canada is probably the best friend the US has. Like every friend, it is a bit different in personality. So what? Why the endless American gripe about that? When countries can't stand even their friends, something is wrong with them.
