Thanks, Vicki! I agree, every teacher needs to be on board, but from my experience, most teachers are excited to have the new, focused direction and rigor. Regarding clock hours--those are handled through your district. After all the facilitators have had a chance to verify participation, I send that information on to the folks in charge of clock hours in each district. Sometime in the after next week, you'll hear from someone in your district about how to proceed with clock hour paperwork in your district.

Welcome to week 5! I just want to assure all you non-language arts teachers that likelihood of you being asked to teach narrative writing in your classes is pretty slim. (Phew!) Nonetheless, this week does examine the narrative writing standards. Feel free to approach the prompt in a way that feels authentic to you--no need to pretend that you will be weaving narrative into your cell division unit. Although . . . :)

It will, indeed, be interesting to see how this all plays out in terms of how what we "cover" may or may not change. Overall, I'm hoping that the CCSS will bring our content into sharper focus by ensuring that our students truly a learning and understanding at a deep level.

I think Craft and Structure will the be the stretch for many of us--and our students. Truthfully, it wasn't until a couple years into my teaching career that I was exposed to how and understanding of a text's structure can help a reader--truly, as a student, no one had taught me that--I felt cheated! But then I moved on and put the new knowledge into practice in my classroom.

Hi there, everyone. I thought I'd contribute this week by giving you a resource. Each time we get to this part of the book, folks have lots of questions about how teachers are supposed to go about figuring out text complexity. While there's no easy answer, I was excited to see that Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst include a Text Complexity Worksheet in their recent book Notice & Note: Strategies for Close Reading. Happily, the Text Complexity Worksheet is available online: http://www.heinemann.com/shared/companionResource...

While searching for it online, I then stumbled upon this draft document from Arizona Department of Ed: http://www.azed.gov/special-education/files/2013/... It includes two sample texts--one literary and one informational an analyzes both for text complexity.

Indeed: both/and, not either/or. :)
