The bailouts just further entrench the government in what used to be called the ‘private sector’ and ‘free markets’. To change this trend we must separate the government from the corporations as an important step to returning to be a true democracy again. The lobbyist dollars drown out the concerned citizens’ legitimate public discourse on issues that need to be debated by citizens, not corporations. Companies are not citizens, they exist to turn a profit, not to be moral or righteous or even responsible. Corporations spend money in Washington to get a competitive advantage over each other, not to improve our democracy. Eliminating corporate income taxes and removing lobbying for favoritism by corporations in Washington is the fastest way to get the peoples voices heard in the critical debates of public policy. Corporations are not named in the constitution and have no rights yet they finance the slow and steady elimination of the rights belonging to us citizens who are investors, shareholders and ultimately tax payers.
