I know my history. My great grandfather left Naples, Italy in 1889 because of the famine and sailed around cape horn to land in San Francisco. On the voyage he learned enough English to become conversant. When he landed, the immigration people couldn't spell his Italian name, so they anglicized it. He was proud to have an "American" name and to this day we are known by that name.

He was a baker by trade, and took to following the mining camps and sold his bread to the miners, making more than those poor chaps ever got in ore.

In those days, the Italians were allowed to immigrate with just their visa. They would stamp big red letters on their visa "WOP" which meant "With Out Passport".

Great grandpa insisted that because he was in America, that the family speak English, because he wanted them to fit in.
