The function of the Fed was never apart of the government. Congress has the power to regulate the value of money by declaring the ratio between gold and silver, or any other metal, based on market values. They do not have the power to create credit. A central bank is unconstitutional and is the reason for the current economic situation we find ourselves in.

You may want to rethink the Federal Reserve comment. If you want free market capitalism, then you cannot have a central bank, regardless of who controls it. No one should have the power to print money out of thin air.

I think there are a good amount of people that agree with a lot of what Ron Paul (Congressman, not Senator :) ) has to say, but write him off because conservative pundits say he is just another anti war cook. To write him off without actually listening what he has to say about his positions makes you no better than a liberal who writes off a conservative because of the usual stereotypes. If Ron Paul is an anti war cook, I guess Thomas Jefferson was too. There is a difference between Isolationism and non-intervention. What if every country in the world had a Saddam Hussein? Should we go liberate every country? Could we afford such a thing? The reason countries in Europe can afford their ridiculous socialist programs is because they don't spend much on defense. Why? Because they have the US to rely on. We give so much money every year to countries in the form of foreign aid. Israel gets 2 Billion a year. Foreign aid is no different than Welfare or government subsidies. People become dependent on it.

While I do agree that there are some Republicans who are genuinely against big government, I think they are in the minority. I would argue that most of the Republican oppposition will oppose the Dems spending just because the Dems are proposing it. If McCain were president they would be for it. I voted for Bush because I am a fiscal conservative... and I've never felt so betrayed. An 850 billion dollar highway bill with unbelievable amounts of pork. Where was his veto?! He didn't veto anything for 6 years. I've lost my confidence in the Republican Party and I will not give it back until they earn it. The only party I believe that is truly for small government is the Libertarian Party. Maybe it is time to start showing them some support. This 2 party system looks more and more like a 1 party system. Introducing a 3rd party into the equation could really throw a wrench into the works.

As many posts have stated, we need to abolish the Federal Reserve and return to sound money. For those who aren't really sure what the Federal Reserve is and how it works and don't want to pick up a book to read about central banking (come on you know you want to...) here is a great video that explains the system.

Austrian Economics predicted this crisis. They have shown that the crisis and in fact the whole boom bust cycle has one route cause. The Federal Reserve... End the Fed!

The Bush budget was 3 trillion last year. When the Republican's were in power they increased spending just the same. Don't get fooled by party politics, it is just a distraction. Both parties are wrong. Let's throw out all the incumbents.

I just watched an old Ayn Rand speech from 1961, "Capitalism vs. Communism". She is amazing. This is definitely worth a view. She pulls no punches. For anyone who is unfamiliar with Ayn Rand, please read Atlas Shrugged... I know it's long, but when you start to get into it, you will ask yourself, "Wait, when was this written... did she have a crystal ball!?"

One of the main reasons the founders put the electoral college in, was to prevent presidents from merely pandering to the masses. This country is supposed to be a republic, not a democracy. The founders knew that tyranny could come from the majority, as well as the individual.

Even though this was the intent, elections today are almost always decided by the popular vote getter. But just think, if we didn't have an electoral college, we could have had Al Gore for president... Still want to abolish the electoral college?

I agree. It is the responsibility of the people to vote out bad politicians. I see the problem, as most have stated, that people don't pay attention and just vote for the name they know, but I think that is what Glenn is trying to get at with this project. We need to wake up our friends and neighbours. We would be better off to educate the electorate rather than try to pass a law to escape our responsibilty as citizens.
