My article is part tongue in cheek and part rant. My rant is about brands who think social media is a channel to scream and shout like traditional media channels. Social media is a great place to do marketing when it's done through a combination of content, engagement and well placed advertising.

It is so true that it is hard to standout, especially when you are new. It takes time and a lot of hard work to develop content that your audience notices, consumes and shares. It takes a commitment to quality content and engagement. And, that requires resources. It's not easy, but it is worthwhile when it's done correctly.

I'm okay with social media as another distribution platform as long as a marketer knows how to use the channel in a way that is not strictly a broadcast channel. I'm all for social media marketing through great experiences, through quality content and engagement.

Jim, I agree that more people are consuming content on their smart phone. Video is very popular. But, long form content is still popular too. Some people are "readers" and enjoy reading long form content.

Yes, larger companies have an inherent advantage in their size. But, if their culture doesn't support social business their size advantage doesn't help them. The culture must support the initiative.
