The other layer to this story is that the author HIMSELF is gay, and that he's afraid that his family will erase him as well. If I found out that my family was keeping another family member's life a secret, and that family member had something that big in common with me? I'd feel pretty betrayed too.

Honestly almost all the candles you're seeing in the last shot were brought by me and a friend. :P It was a "candlelight vigil", but most people didn't bring any.
