ACHEYJAKE, I couldn't post a reply, but thank you for your comments. I agree with what you are saying. This is a not all about our food, but about everything that the government touches...at least lately. I've never put the "vote with dollars" idea into persepctive, but you are right. I do actually choose where I shop based on ideals and service. For example, I choose to shop at a small local grocery store because I know my money is supporting the local economy and business owners in my very small town. In return, they help me get my groceries to the car and will order anything I ask for. I work in a much larger city and could easily shop there, but I would rather have less of a selection and support the greater cause. Thank you again for helping me put it into perspective.
KhetaAmenti, I see your point. Again, I'm not totally against irradiation; however, I don't think it is all positive. Probably the most explicit site I read regarding vitamin loss was on foodandwaterwatch.org. They weren't pounding on the irradiation as much as they were simply presenting facts. If you check it out, let me know what you think. I'm open-minded enough to look at all sides. I appreciate your constructive comments. I still will avoid the symbol as long as I have other food choices, but I don't think that it will poison me if I were to consume it. :-)
Acheyjake, I'm not freaking out about the radiation in the food. If you had read my post, you will find that I didn't mention anything about the personal threat of radiation. I'll admit that I'm not totally informed, that is why I stated that I was researching it. My husband works in a nuclear plant. I work in the healthcare industry. I am far from ignorant regarding the effects of radiation or the lack thereof.
I apologize if my statements hacked you off; however, in regard to our personal rights, I feel that we should have a CHOICE as to how our food is treated. I know I don't have to buy it...for now. The nutritional deficiencies that have been reported are my major concern. The fact that a seemingly cute little symbol attached to the food is slipped in there with out much comment concerns me. I feel that it is the beginning of more to come....more that may not be as harmless.
Amen! I think that voting in people from the real world would be the best start we could have. I don't really care that they are overly intelligent, as long as they are honest, can admit to mistakes, and fix real problems. I'm tired of seeing band-aid management. Everytime there is a problem, slap a quick fix on it without measuring the possible consequences (the band-aid)...just make financial supporters happy. Eventually, we will all be covered in sticky crap and won't be able wiggle our way FREE.
Why in the world would anyone think that paying bonuses would be the right thing to do with a false stimulus package? Who could think that it would be acceptable to anyone other than the slated recipients? I am struggling to hold onto the meaning of a stimulus package. It has become a bad word in my vocabulary because it stinks of nothing but corruption.
I'm so sick of hearing that other people are receiving "retention bonuses" and past due earnings from failed companies. I'm sick of hearing that our tax money, i.e. the stimulus package, is going to bail out companies and their executives. This argument about the money will continue until every last cent, and then some, is spent. What will it be worth in the end? Nothing except a big bill that we will all owe.
I've tried to work from the good faith standpoint, but it's getting worse and worse. The bottom line is that mis-managed companies fail. I won't pretend to understand all of the ins and outs, but I know that if I want a "retention bonus"...a paycheck...I will work. If I can't make the money I want, I will look for another job. I will work until I can find another job. I don't ask my employer to pay me more to keep me and then hope the gamble pays off. That defies common sense.
For me, it's not the fact that the food is irradiated. I don't like the thought of what it does to the food, i.e. vitamin loss; however, I'm with CarolynP inregard to honest representation. If the food itself is not an issue (I know it does not have radiation), then the plants the irradiate food can be. Historically, there have been irradiation plants that posed safety issues for the workers and posed the threat for "dirty bombs". I'm still not sure how I feel about it, but I don't think the symbol is clear.
I hope you research a little more before thinking it is great. I've been researching it and have found reports about irradiation sucking the vitamins out of the foods that are treated, the costs of implementing irradiation on our food, and the possibilities afforded by the irradiation industries in regard to nuclear threats and worker safety. I can't see why these are positive things.
On the bacterial side, bacteria is not always a bad thing. If we keep killing off bacteria faster than we can develop system immunities to it, eventually, we will have no defense. Why do you think that certain antibiotics have lost their potency? What about the skin conditions caused by overuse of hand sanitizers?
I think that accountability of the food industry, not quick fixes and governmental control, would eliminate many of the problems we currently face. Many of the bacterial issues of the past are based on human negligence, not science.
Well put, Jaypee. I was trying to be nice, but I like your straight-forward approach. Sums it up for me! lol
First of all, I'm disgusted with the fact that the president seems to be running mini campaigns to sell his agenda. That fact alone lets me know that the proposals at hand cannot stand on merit alone. I'll admit that this is the first time I've every really been stirred up by politics; however, I can't remember anyone with presidential power so blatently trying to sell his goods/agenda with such irreverant tenacity. I can't even think by way of political party anymore. I can't seem to get past the fact that democrat or republican, liberal or conservative, everyone with any governmental power has lost his/her common sense. I don't care if the Leno show is to allow the public to see his humerous side, or that it is a different avenue to get his point across. Quite frankly, I can't feel humerous myself, as I await the next blow to our constitution. Again, WHAT'S THE POINT? Show me exactly how this WILL work. Talk to me like I'm not an idiot.
I live in Samson and know many that were affected by the shootings. At no point in time did it cross my mind that guns were the issue. I wondered about the man that used the guns. Guns are everywhere and are a normal part of my life. I believe that the overwhelming majority of gun owners are responsible and accountable for how they use them. I don't know why gun control is the issue, other than to remove a basic American right and the freedom to protect ourselves and to hunt. The issue is there because ot the lack of understanding by people who don't know what they are asking to take away. It sounds good to blame something...anything...so okay, let's get rid of guns. Whatever!
