Well, it sure isn't common!

Accidents happen. As with most incidents like this, we should all look for a positive. For me, I am able to have more information for classes about gun safety. We should all be able to use accidents like this for teachable moments for others. While this is a horrible thing to have happened, turn it into education for as many people as possible.

Honestly, do you people say the same things about every accident that KOMO reports? Any time someone makes the news with an accident, do you really Monday morning quarterback how they screwed up? We all make mistakes, let's just hope none of yours (or mine) make the news! Hate to hear your comments about some of the stupid things I've done in my life!

You can't teach someone to pay attention or to mandate safety. Consider how many guns are out there and how many accidents happen. While accidents should NEVER be taken lightly, they are not an indication for the creation of more "hoops" to jump through for the rest of the gun owning population.

More laws just create more problems in the long run. Until we focus some of our "stop accidents by way of more training" mentality on objects that kill between 56,000 and 60,000 Americans every year, we should leave things like guns alone. We all seem to ignore or accept the damage done by other deadly objects. No one cries for more training when we see another death caused by one of those... Why? Is it a love of the other objects or an irrational fear of guns that lead to comments about needing more training?

In a perfect world, no one would ever have to cross the threshold between those who have pulled the trigger and those who have not. Once you have, you can never go back. You will be a changed person forever. Sad state of affairs when someone is put on the spot like that. I hope the criminals are caught and the weapon is returned to it's rightful owner without further crime.

Whatever his reason for being armed, the fact that he was is evidence that he was aware of the risks involved with hunting or hiking in the great outdoors. Motivation was not the point. Preparedness was. Evidently, the risks of doing things outdoors warranted a rifle. I'm quite sure that he is glad to have had it.

His original intent may have been hunt and kill a polar bear. The actual use was self defense. Either way, once seperated from his uncle, it was no longer about the hunt, rather about survival.

Sad to me that we have to research and verify the "news"!

Hope you have a great day!

I totally respect what you have to say. From an objective (which is really hard to come by) perspective, trying to learn where the true population of Polar Bears stands today as opposed to 10 - 20 years ago, your best bet is to take the average number given by many researchers and then divide it by how many sites you visited! Lol. Just like global warming, there are STRONG feelings on both sides of the issue. Just because someone is loud doesn't make them right.

Just wish people would take the time to research things on their own and not just go by what someone says.

Al Gore is reportedly going to be the first "carbon billionaire". Do you think that is strong enough evidence for him to stay on track? Right or wrong? Hey, money can make some people do interesting things!

Again, all goes to what "news" source you believe.

I don't know any hunters who only bring one bullet hunting! Then again, the story didn't mention the type of rifle or how many times he shot the bear.

Pretty sure the kid DID take into account the risk involved. Hence the rifle!

Certainly hope that you are practicing what you preach! I know of someone who supports the global warming movement who is not really the best custodian.

Entourage of SUV's and a really anti environment home! Guess it's good for the rest of us to be Earth friendly and not the ones screaming the loudest!
