Do you see a pattern here, though? The Commissioners don't really care about the general public. Their roads, or bridges, or any of those mundane things, But a really cool bicycle underpass, or preventing people from using land in another county, or saving a poor harassed "endangered" eagle...now *those* are things worth spending money on. And, I'm sure they don't care that it might take an extra five minutes for the fire truck to get to my burning house...might just solve the problem of a thorn in their side, eh?

One, many breathed a sigh of relief when Tom Fauvre finally left the office after 20 years. I do *not* relish the thought of someone trained by Fauvre getting back in. Personal experience: When the coroner came to the door of my mother's house after we reported my father finally passing away at home, in his bed 10 years ago....the very first words out of his mouth were "Where are the drugs?" Not...Sorry for your loss, or Condolences....but a demand for private property. Yeah, real sensitive Tom....no wonder Emma found all that stuff stashed in your office.
Two, Yes, I bet Joe Pelle wants to keep neutral. As the highest elected law enforcement official in the county, he has *no* superior (including the Feds...if Joe were to push it) *except* for the Coroner. And that's pretty much the only thing the Coroner *is* over. Nice check and balance. Joe actually supported Emma when she first ran, but was prevented by County Politics from endorsing an Independent when there was a Democratic Candidate.
Lastly, I still have my shirt and hat from Emma's campaign.....should work well for this one.

To your second question.....Yes. Using deadly force requires a threshold...and a mighty high one, as far as I'm concerned. Deadly force isn't always what it seems, as in this case. The gun was harmless. Whether then or earlier, the gun was incapable of firing. Once the gun was "whipped out" and the officer surprised, why did he respond by taking the time to draw *his* weapon?? Why didn't he duck for cover while drawing his weapon? Because the gun never fired?? And the opportunity was there to respond with deadly force, just like they were trained. When dealing with potentially mentally unbalanced and depressed individuals.\, an officer should be aware of the possibility for crazy actions. Being surprised by a gun pulled out is to be expected, but once there were no shots fired, the officer should have picked himself off the floor or stepped from behind the wall, and disarmed and taken the guy into custody for threatening a police officer. Everyone lives.
The third question....Training. Just like the "shoot to kill" training took over in a split second, if the training had been strictly Non-lethal, other options would have been available. Tasers, rubber bullets, tear gas, the list of non-lethal options is really quite extensive. Trained to duck for cover *before* shooting back wouldn't hurt, either.
Being LEO is not an easy job....nor, IMHO is it for everybody. It takes a certain personality to be able to put others welfare before your own...no matter what. Not that non-lethality will work every time....we are all just human, after all....but if we trained our LEOs differently...we wouldn't have incidents like this or like Ishmael Mena....or any of the countless others killed and/or shot by well meaning protectors of our community.

As to your second question....at what point is it justified to return fire??? Maybe once he was *fired* upon?? Maybe when dealing with potentially disturbed people they might use different procedures?? LOTS of potential options exist besides pulling out your gun and wailing away (66% hit rate at 5 feet?????) Any other people in that house see where the missed "police" shot went???? Through the wall? Into the next room?
REALLY makes you want to call the police when there's minor troubles, doesn't it?? Invite in para-military trained armed men, who shoot to kill, to deal with your mentally disturbed son.....What did you *think* would happen???

Nothing in his oath that prevents him from taking a life??? Maybe there should be?
What "hyperbole"??? It's NOT logical to duck for cover rather than stand there and pull your gun and shoot??? What planet do *you* come from???
Sorry....if I was in charge (and before you sound off about that...I ran for Boulder County Sheriff and received 18% of the vote. I lost because Joe Pelle Changed parties to Democrat in order to win in Boulder County and a Libertarian hasn't a snowball's chance in hell of winning in Boulder county....regardless of Philosophy) it would be policy to suspend and re-train any officer who kills another person. It is NOT right to have paramilitary forces roaming our streets with the mandate to shoot to kill, should they even *perceive* a threat. I expect better things from any force designated to "protect" me.....
