The USB SuperDrive serves that purpose, it also allows them to charge it as an add-on. For the very minimal times you actually need a disk drive.

They did the same with the internal storage and PCI Express card slots, shifting it all out to the Thunderbolt external products. So there is no real solution for the people who use dual/quad fibre cards or broadcast quality capture cards.

I like that one NeXT mod, where the guy polished the case. Since it was made of a magnesium alloy, he could bring it down to a mirrored finish.
