Typical response...blame DHS. This woman needed to take responsibility for her own child and herself. Today's society reeks of "blame everyone but the criminal". "It's not my fault, it's my brother's girlfriends, uncles, half brother on his mothers sides fault".

Since we can't execute these child killers, we should at the very least sterilize the trash while there in prison, so they can't reproduce when they get out.

The name "Hryhoriy" is usually Ukrainian or Greek. "Kozachok" is most definitely Ukrainian. "Kozachok" is a folk dance from Ukraine. It is a fast, linear, couple-dance in 2/4, typically in a constantly increasing tempo and of an improvisatory character in a major key.

God Bless this soldier who takes his duty seriously, has committed himself to be physically ready for his fellow soldiers, and for all of us citizens who he is so willing to protect! I thank him for his service, as he has volunteered for duty! I guess people forget the flood of 2008 already, and the job the National Guard did for us.

As for the Gazette, typical half-baked and slanted reporting.

Welcome to the United Socialist States of America. The ones that don't want to work for anything, or are here illegally, will now get everything they want free, because they feel they are entitled, while you and I who work hard each day get the honor of paying for it.

Pat Shey was probably wearing his TrueNorth golf shirt when he voted for the yardy guard purchase. Shey, Vernon and Gulick should all do us a favor and resign from the Council effective immediately. This is just another example how nothing is getting done in this city, and how many are padding their pockets at our expense. Put that $540,000 into street repair.

So how about this. Tear down the tree. Sell the metal for scrap. Add that money to the $350,000 being so called raised to repair the tree, tear down the Sinclair Smokestack, and use the money and the bricks for street repairs or new street paving that are really needed. Or sell each brick for $50 each engraved with the purchasers name and date he/she was stupid enough to buy a brick and vote in thecurrent city council. Then use that money for street repair too!

Oh and the city announced today they are fixing that ugly tree at the tune of $350,000....

"The Tree has been a Cedar Rapids focal point for years; it identifies our city, and visitors shoot pictures there," said City Manager Jim Prosser. "It's important that the Tree and its surroundings be maintained in attractive condition. This assistance from volunteers will permit us to continue to focus on other priorities." Ryan Companies US, Inc. has estimated construction costs at $350,000, to be paid with private funds that the committee is in the process of raising.

LOL! Vould be nize park comrade! Teach children where hotdogs once made! People paid low wages, work long hours, no complain! Just like Mother Russia! ;-)

Yes, the City of 5 Smells and the big ugly metal tree by the interstate that the city council thinks that grows money! Wonderous tree! What? That's not money? It's bird poop? Councilman Pat Shey (wearing a free True North Insurance shirt): "I want another opinion on that. Let's hire a consulting firm, pay them $400,000 to truly find out if it is really bird poop". Councilwoman Monica Vernon:" Let's pay $600,000. Throw more money at it. You will get more of what you pay for." Shey: "BRILLIANT!"

A big waste of taxpayers money. Limited ridership. Americans are to attached to their cars and privacy to want to spend hours on a train when they can save money and time by still driving to Chicago. The customer use of Amtrak across the US is very limited and looses $Billions every year. Guess it might benefit the Chicago drug dealers in delivering larger amount of Crack Cocaine to the IC/CR corridor though. Trains are fine for short runs and in large metropolitan areas like New York, DC, Philly, and Boston areas. Or the left coast like the state of California. It isn't cost effective for the low populations of the midwest.
