I've been kinda lucky in that my kids have always been avid readers (even when they were tiny babies, they both adored books). When they were really little (under a year), I never read stories, instead we looked at thousands of books that had clear pictures, and we'd point to this and that, and I'd 'narrate' based on whatever my child was focusing on. We'd ask questions and ponder, so that the reading experience was more interactive. We only progressed to reading the actual words in storybooks when they were toddlers, and we started with very simple predictable story lines. (A lot of books designed for this young age have very abstract concepts in them, which I think are actually more designed to entertain the parents than the child). Does that help?
Otherwise, here are a few posts that deal with comprehension for older kids, maybe one of these might help... http://www.fantasticfunandlearning.com/comprehens... http://mosswoodconnections.com/activities-for-rea... http://growingbookbybook.com/modeling-comprehensi...
