“I certainly don’t want anyone to leave or be thrown out of my party – and certainly not talented and decent people with whom I have been privileged to serve in the past as a Member of Parliament.” Yuch. Yes you do.

It is indeed the last throw of the dice for the Europhile elite in Westminster and Whitehall and the universities, trades unions, multinational boardrooms, charities, newspapers and TV and radio studios of the UK, farmers, students and young people, scientists, health professionals, our security services, bankers, insurers, holders of the pound (today at a 35 year low, well done Tories, a new record), diplomats, car and aerospace manufacturers, inwards investors. Scum the lot of them, we can do without, the sooner they move somewhere else the better. What a hoot. Even Good old Tony Abbott gets another pitch in. Don’t you just love the modern Tory party. Well done.

That logic is perverse, the U.K. becomes a third country when, at its own choice, it leaves the EU and therefore automatically loses its passporting right to sell certain services, in this case insurance, across border. As I’m sure you know, a regime of accepting a status of mutual equivalence was unacceptable to the EU and the political declaration allowed for future agreement on an equivalence regime whereby the two parties agree to trade only if the two sides remain broadly aligned in regulation. Now of course the U.K. politicians have stopped that process in its tracks and no deal is all the rage. It would be perverse for one side to allow access without a mutual agreement. Meanwhile we have to protect our interests and establish a course of action. We can’t wait. We don’t have time to be angry at anybody. We’re quite used to obtaining such licences, we have more internationally than any global competitor. It means small numbers of jobs are transferred and tax revenue lost, but not a great deal. The position for other services however is more significant.

The fact is my main business provides about $5 billion of services revenue into the EU and we have already relocated to Brussels, gained the necessary licences and do not need a trade deal.

Trade continues with minor hassles but no FTA tanks the EU economy......a bit of a contradiction!

I rather got the impression that the prorogation was of no significance, it only reduced parliamentary time before Brexit by 3/4 days. And now I am to understand it is all a Machiavellian plot and all the usual cheerleaders are out in support. I rather think that we seriously overestimate the strength of our position as usual, the EUs position is quite clear...come up with a credible acceptable alternative proposal on the backstop in 30 days.. simple as that. And if we do reach agreement on that, Bojo will presumably promote accepting everything else in the WA?? Err, what? It is after all, the U.K., not Germany or France, that has descended to the bottom of the G7 growth table and is importing devaluation induced price inflation....that makes mockery of Mogg repeated claims of cheaper food and clothing imports....why does he repeat this rubbish? The clue is for Bojo to spend his time in Ireland and get them on side.

Do you think perhaps he is being less than serious?

Just factual. I’m expecting many years of gripes on here about how we became a vassal State.

We’re going to be anyway so you might as well get used to it sooner or later

Fudge the political declaration, pass the WA and get on with it.
