I think that what most people fear about socialism is the extreme thinking “Individuals don’t matter.” Extreme socialist governments don’t like individuals thinking for themselves—they want to do the thinking for their “citizens.”
Christ spoke more to the individual than to the masses. His teachings and what he lived portrayed the idea that individuals are responsible for their behavior—towards neighbors, family, and even enemies. He did say to render unto Caesar that which is his—but to render to God that which is His. Governments can promote programs to help defray people’s problems, but can government exact charity out of anyone? If I see an immediate need, why can’t I help? Can I honestly believe that governmental red tape will help that immediate need? If governments alone were responsible for filling in “need”, wouldn’t we all abandon societal feeling for our fellowmen? “Why not just let the government do it?” Wouldn’t that lesson motivation towards charitable feeling?
Christ taught through the story of the Good Samaritan that love doesn’t come from or through anyone else but instead from our own very being—our heart. Obama can't do that with his "spreading the wealth around" idea. We're human beings, not programmable robots.
