One of my friends for whom "friend" is too small a word is moving away. Tomorrow, we'll load up the truck and send her off, and I'm welling up every few hours and I'm not okay. I'm grateful, so grateful to live in a time when the internet exists and FaceTime exists and her moving halfway across the country doesn't mean I'll never see or talk to her again, but more than anything I just want her with me, want her shoulder to put my arm on at the movies, want to look in my rearview mirror and see her in the back seat curled around her kindle, want her hip to rest my head on when I'm watching Netflix or writing emails, want her body to dance around in the kitchen. And yes life is made up of meetings and partings (you should see my family sitting on the couch and sobbing in unison while watching MCC on Christmas Eve), but...there is a fundamental part of me that knows, all evidence to the contrary, that some things are supposed to last forever. And the fact that they don't is the most painful part of being a human.

And here we are saying goodbye to the Toast, too. I am so grateful to have found this place, so astonishingly homelike and so full of wonderful people. Thank you, dear Toasties; thank you, Nicole and Nikki and Mallory.

“Well, here at last, dear friends, on the shores of the Sea comes the end of our fellowship in Middle-earth. Go in peace! I will not say: do not weep; for not all tears are an evil.”

"Jack and Stephen met again, almost on the very steps of the Crown. 'Well met, brother,' cried Jack from a little distance. Stephen considered the Commodore's face and his gait: was he sober? 'You look uncommon cheerful, my dear,' he said, leading him in the direction of the Pigtail steps. 'I wish you may not have met with some compliant young person, overwhelmed with all the gold lace upon your person.'
'Never in life,' said Jack. 'Aubrey the Chaste is what I am called throughout the service.'"

"I didn't know there was enough money in poetry to support a man, even in the way in which Rocky lived; but it seems that if you stick to exhortations to young men to lead the strenuous life and don't shove in any rhymes, editors fight for the stuff. Rocky showed me one of his things once. It began:

Be!
Be!
The past is dead.
To-morrow is not born.
Be to-day!
To-day!
Be with every nerve,
With every muscle,
With every drop of your red blood!
Be!

It was printed opposite the frontispiece of a magazine, with a sort of scroll round it, and a picture in the middle of a fairly nude chappie with bulging muscles, giving the rising sun the once-over."

I pretty much only make two meals, which are just variations of eggs on toast. The first one is wilted kale and a fried egg on toast, with plenty of salt and pepper and olive oil, and the second one is herbed goat cheese and tomatoes on toast, with plenty of salt and pepper and olive oil and most of the time a hardboiled egg on the side.

I also believe in chopping up some red potatoes and roasting them in the oven with a sausage or two and maybe a bell pepper for like an hour.
