Real guys are interesting, that a sure thing. If I had been stranded with that bunch of guys, there are a few things that are true: 1) As far as they were concerned, there still wouldn't have been a girl around for miles*; 2) I would not have taken part in the onion-honor contest; 3) I would have enjoyed watching it...treMENdously. Guys are the most amusing things I've ever met, next to babies.

*Because any girl who spends enough time with a mob of guys is either a girlfriend or gender-invisible.

Who gets to be the shoe police? The same lunatics who pawn off shoe-like-objects complete unsuited to walking, standing, or any of the other things feet might be good for. I figure if I'm too old to wear something, I'm probably old enough to be eccentric and wear it anyway.
As for irrational hopes: Maybe I'll get over my self and get something done. Hasn't happened so far this year.

The centre cannot hold, but all is changed, changed utterly, and a terrible beauty is born.

I'm pretty sure Harold Lindgren knows that poet...

Happy New Year!

This is consoling. "Random patterns" is one of my most commonly used tags on the blog. I've been getting lazy, though, and it is time to build some more virtual synapses.

If you don't follow PetaPixel, it is worth checking out. (The Tweets accurately describe the post content, which is a bonus.)

1) No.
2) Yes. They are a mystifying glimpse into the minds of others.
3) Trailer: Yes. Vlog: Not so far (I have no talent for it.)
4) When someone asks around town, I say yes. I'm not sure that qualifies are arranging events myself, because I never take the initiative. I like speaking to classes about writing in general. I find the notion of "selling" my book horrific.

My impression so far: I am an ant jumping up and down on a teeter-totter. The sucker moves, but not because of me. As long as jumping feels OK, I'll do it.

I remember that vivid scene--and the rest of the book. Seth and his environment were so perfectly realized.

Wow. I just realized the only version we have of Androgynous is the cover by Crash Test Dummies. I might be warping my kids' minds or something.

I think the contest will be fun for the fans. I think the feedback for the cover of THE DUFF was fun for the people who participated in that, too. (See that here: http://kodymekellkeplinger.blogspot.com/2010/03/l... )

But I'm not sure the blogging/commenting community is a reliable sample of what most readers want. It's a pretty small, self-selected slice of the reader population. In the case of the contest on Bookshelves of Doom, the commenters so far all appear to be female. It would be interesting to see what sort of a not-girly cover a not-girl might come up with. Maybe a not-girl will participate. So far it doesn't look likely.

It's sort of like writing fan-fic, re-imagining the cover. It seems unlikely to change the narrative.

I have to say, it kind of cracked me up when Andrew suggested banking some excellent posts for a time when a blog gets more readers. (Do you remember that happening? Did I misunderstand or make it up?) I know I couldn't do that because I have NO idea what other people will find interesting. I ended up going with Disqus. It works. Changing the comments system has definitely changed the back and forth on the blog.
