But just as every jedi was not Darth Vader. every unicorn is not Sombra. We are talking about unicorns as a sub-species, not exceptional examples.

If we could see a battle between Daring Do and Starlight Glimmer, that might settle some things. Honestly, my bits are on Daring. Those fancy spells take concentration. Everypony has a plan until they get a hoof in their muzzle.

I think a problem arises with the word "overpowered." Overpowered at what?

Hearth's Warming Eve showed that everypony depends upon the Earth ponies to grow food, the pegasi to control weather, and the unicorns for... the sun and the moon...? Let's call it "miscellaneous telekinesis."

These seem to be general aptitudes. But we've seen a pegasi named Snowflake and a unicorn named Shining Armor who just might beat Big Mac in a tug-o-war. We've seen an Earth-Pony (well, Zebra) who can give Twilight a run for her magic. I wouldn't be surprised if, eventually, we see Dr. Hooves overpower one of those pesky unicorns with a little applied science.

But if we must talk about combat, literally overpowering somepony, we've seen a pegasus named Daring who one-punches tigers! There's a saying in martial arts circles: it's not the fighting style, it's the fighter.

So much of our filmmaking, and our culture, would mortify me in front of the ponies! I can just imagine a horrified, offended Celestia banning this unwholesome import, or even closing that portal for good, after watching Scarface, the Godfather, or Die Hard.

Les Miserables.

...maybe some Star Trek. Little else.

I fear "Too long; didn't read" shall be the epitaph of our species.

(Reposting! Same comments bug.)

The post-Christmas lull, 2012. Bored. All sorts of people whose opinions I respect have been talking up My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Ugh! The title alone would have turned me off, and I'm old enough to remember the ghastly, insipid prior versions. But... fine! Youtube the first episode.

Poor Ms. Oliver would turn out to be very good, but her cutesy read here turned me off immediately. "Used her unicorn powers?" Gurgle! Not all her fault, the text has no sense of poetry, none of the gravitas of a tale from ages ago. Twilight looks up from her book, and I hit the X button. Not happening.

Oh-God-o'clock in the morning, I sit up in bed. Creation myth, solar deity looking after the offspring, ominous figure in black, catastrophe averted... I know I've seen these elements before, but where?

Holy Moley, the homaged Watership Down?! And Twilight even threw that hint out in her dialogue? Oh, are you kidding me?! Now I have to give this show a second chance. Obviously, the show didn't blow that chance.

Finally met Mitch Larson on the convention circuit. Turns out he adores Richard Adams, to the point of calling Watership Down the book that most inspired and influenced him. But ironically, he'd never noticed the similarity. :0)

Holy Moley, they homaged Watership Down?! Are you kidding me? And Twilight even threw us that clue in her dialogue? Now I hafta give this show a second chance! And obviously the show didn't blow that chance.

Finally had the opportunity to meet Mitch Larson on the convention circuit. Turns out he adores Richard Adams, to the point of calling Watership Down the book that most influenced and inspired him. Ironically, the similarity had never occurred to him. :-)

Late that night, I sat up in bed -- ye gods! Did they homage Watership Down? Are they that smart?! Sure enough, I rewatch the opening to the '70s film adaptation, and then the show opener. Yup -- creation myth, benevolent sun god(dess) watching over the offspring, ominous dark figure, transition to "modern era" with a more complex animation style. It's all there! Now I need to give this show a chance.

And the show didn't blow it. It was merely acceptable at first, then the Sonic Rainboom hit, and I was enjoying myself. Then Discord turned up and it was all over.

Had the chance to finally meet Mitch Larson on the convention circuit. Turns out he's a huge fan of Richard Adams, to the point of calling Watership Down the book that most inspired him. Ironically, the similarity of the shows' opening sequences hadn't occurred to him until I pointed it out. :-)
