I would be remiss not to thank you for your many years of service as a member of our Military and as a Firefighter/EMT. There will definitely be a place in heaven for people like us who respond to the needs of others when they have nowhere else to turn. That is especially true in our area tonight where the temperature was down to 1 degree F when I CAME HOME FROM MY Friends of the NRA committee meeting about 30 minutes ago. I sure hope our pagers are quite tonight although there have already been two serious accidents in our vicinity (other jurisdictions) earlier tonight. Slick roads across our State. I know they sent two helicopters to the scene of one this evening and it sounded pretty bad from the scanner traffic.

Fight the good fight. Right will prevail
Sincerely, Bob Deister

Besides my son being a combat medic, my wife and I have been involved with EMS for many years. I am a volunteer firefighter/EMT-B with our local service in our small Kansas town and I am on our Emergency Response Team at the Petroleum Refinery where I am the Training Coordinator. In addition to being a member of our volunteer service, my wife has been employed full-time for many years with our County run EMS department as an EMT- I and is the Regional CPR Faculty Representative for the American Heart Association and a member of the American Red Cross National Disaster Response Team..

Dear Ron,

Thank you for your kind words and I will definitely pass them on to my son. He is on his third overseas deployment having spent Jan 2005 to Jan. 2006 in Iraq, Jan 2007 to April 2008 in Iraq and has been in Afghanistan since May of this year. Besides the Birthdays, Thanksgiving, Christmas and other family get togethers he has been overseas during the birth of two of his three sons and will be gone for the birth of his fourth this coming January. Obviously he has made good use of his time when he has been home. I told him if he wants that girl so bad, he should think about adoption. Seriously though, he has sacrificed a lot and so has his family. His wife deserves a special medal for what she has had to put up with when he has been gone. She is one tough lady.

I would suggest getting hold of someone from Rear Detachment at Ft. Carson to see if they will give you any information. I know your family would like to more of what happened, but the Army is reluctant to give out that information. Another contact would be with someone from the Family Readiness Group. I would start here:
Amanda Waterman
FRSA 2-77 FA 4/4
Office (719)503-4412
Cell (719)338-6039
amanda.s.waterman@us.army.mil
Rear Detachment:
Rear Detachment Commander - CPT MacConnell or
First Sergeant - SFC(P) Lucas
(719) 503-4400 or 4401

Be sure to let me know if there is anything I can do for you family.

Sincerely,
Bob Deister

Good evening Frank,

Once again let me offer my heartfelt condolences for the loss of your precious son. Yes my son is a combat medic from your son’s battalion. He was away at another base at the time of the incident, but caught the first chopper he could get back to base. He feels so bad because he wasn’t there to run the aid station which is his primary duty. At this time I am sorry I cannot give you much other information on the wounded soldier that was with Elijah. I know he underwent emergency surgery on his hip/pelvic area at the Bagram Medical Center and then was medivaced to an unknown location for treatment of severe burns. He is certainly not out of the woods yet from what I know. I will let you know more when I can. Right now my Son cannot say anymore due to OPSEC.

I cried when told of this yesterday morning by my daughter-in-law. Partly for Elijah and partly out of fear for my own son who is there with him. My son is OK this time, but everytime something like this happens, I feel the odds get worse. Lets all get on our knees to thank God America has these amazing young men and women to protect us against those who would destroy our freedom and way of life. Especially pray for Spc. Rao and his family and for the recovery of his fellow soldier who was seriously injured in the blast.
