Taking that argument out a bit further, would you say it's OK to use, for example, "Sambo" or "Mammy" because the idealisation of those stereotypes has nothing to do with the lived experience of African Americans? Members of the Rom communities have repeatedly asked bellydancers to stop using the term Gypsy and I don't really think it's that hard to give it up.

What is the alternative? Well... what are you doing? Is it a fantasy folkloric? Is it Rom fusion? Is it Baladi? Or is it just dancing around with a tambourine? (I'm better with zills than tambourine too).

There's a woman (I think) who invaribly comments on the meatiest Guardian recipes with a link to her blog and her vegetarian version. She may be the person I hate most who I haven't met.
