As a former reporter, I can tell you that even the closest relationships with someone don't always mean things will be kept off the record. Did I ever publish something that was given to me off-the-record? No. But many do. At the end of the day, you are staying out of harm's way by not saying anything that you aren't comfortable with being printed. Better safe than sorry.
