Suzanne, It's not going to take another 20 years before we see any changes. Changes are here now, and you can help speed up the change. Talk about Allen West , Tim Scott , and Jennifer Carroll (FL Lt. Governor) who won. Mention Ryan Frazier who came reasonably close. Don't forget that in 2012 we'll have another election. More black men and women will run as Republicans and more will win. And don't forget to mention Nikki Haley (SC-Gov), Susana Martinez (NM-Gov), Marco Rubio (FL-Senate), and Brian Sandoval (NV-Gov)

I think a question that needs to be asked is: why does the Congressional Black Caucus go along with this. They have enough of a power base to reject this. How does one member getting a few extra perks help them? Why would Rangel (assuming he keeps his office), John Lewis, Jessie Jackson Jr., Sheila Jackson Lee want Jim Clayburn to get this made up position? What's in it for them?

There's an awful lot of physical characteristics that people think influence the electorate (aside from race and gender). Some feel that taller candidates do better, those with a full head of hair, mustaches and beards are a no-no and of course weight. Just a few short years ago Al Gore had an "alpha male" consultant (of course no alpha male would want or need one) and going back a few more years some people blame the loss of Dukakis on his "tank commander" photos. Consultants, and other sophisticates, place a lot of emphasis on how a candidate looks and talks. How else can we explain the losses of Adlai Stevenson to Dwight Eisenhower, or Hubert Humphrey and George McGovern to Nixon, or Jimmy Carter and Mondale to Ronald Reagan, or Al Gore and Kerry to George Bush?

But back to the comment -- there will come a point when there are enough black and latino advocates of the free market and small government that the existing narrative will collapse onto itself. (I love saying that as it annoys my inbred, progressive friends to no end.) Don't worry Rick. If Allen West is who we think he is he will bring in many more candidates in 2012. How many Black and Latino representatives do we need to bring this BS to a close? I don't know. My guess is more than 2 and less than 20. The Democratic Party will fight this to no end because if the Democratic Party cannot count on 90+% of the black vote they will become a permanent minority party.

Rick, There is a critical mass (or tipping point) when new ideas take traction. This narrative that free markets and small government is racist has been going on for a long, long time. The same people that brought the racist unions brought you the concept that freedom is racist. I suppose that's because racism=inequality and social ism=equality therefore that which isn't social ist is racist.

Well, to be more exact - I wouldn't call him a "hater." It's just like the NAACP which is Progressive first and promoting black candiates second. In a choice between a white "progressive" and a black conservative the NAACP will always choose the Progressive. As far Clinton, Meeks, Crist and Rubio are concerned. At a certain point the White House, Clinton and other Dem operatives became convinced they had to stop Rubio at any cost. Rubio is telegenic, has a great life story and can become a real force on the national stage. The crucial mistake made by the White House and others was waiting too long. They should have chosen a candidate by the beginning of September. I can't believe I'm in the position of "defending" Clinton. I detest the man. With Communism on the run in the early 1990s he tries very hard to turn this country left. It's simply that I don't think he/they chose Crist over Meeks because he didn't want a black man to become Senator.

Rik, I agree, but I must admit I'm a little disappointed that Ryan Frazier CO-7 didn't win. But the fact that Allen West won! Now that's something. Funny, once Tim Scott won the primary it seemed like a done deal so that, for the most part, I stopped paying attention to it. He ended up winning with 65% of the vote. Say what you will but when a Black man wins with 2/3rds of the vote in the heart of the old confederacy - things have changed.

Dian, Nixon's Southern Strategy was not flipping white racists. If you cared to pay attention to facts you would know that the hero of southern white racists was George Wallace. George Wallace was governor of Alabama and ran as a third party candidate. George Wallace, a Democrat racist actually won 5 states (if I remember correctly). Nixon's Southern Strategy was based on Wallace splitting the Democratic vote. Nixon felt that Wallace would take enough racists to his standard that he, Nixon, would be able to win states with 40 percent of the vote. Nixon actually won 3 states with LESS than 40% of the vote. What is racist about being for limited government? What is racist about individual freedom? What is so good about government controlling what you do? Don't eat greasy burgers Dian? They're bad for you. Don't do this. Don't do that. How about if YOU decide for yourself whether or not to eat those burgers?

vagirl, Interesting comment. Yes stopping a rising superstar like Rubio is important to the Democratic Party, but there is no reason to believe that Crist could stop him in the general election. Let me rephrase that: 4 months ago there was every reason to believe that Crist could beat Rubio in the general election, but not now. It is more than a little curious that the Democratic Party decided to rally around Crist, a "Reagan Republican" one minute and a Nancy Pelosi moderate the next rather than Meek who won his primary fair and square. How could they believe that Crist had a shot with a week left to go in the campaign, with a large percent of the Florida vote already cast? At best this decision reeks of panic and desperation, not qualities I want in a leader.

Tim Scott (SC-1) will win. Allen West (FL-22) is leading. Ryan Frasier (CO-7) has just been put into toss-up by RCP William Randall (NC-13) is likely Dem but he's within striking distance. Charles Lollar (MD-5) still is a long-shot. Along with those black Republicans are Hispanics Marco Rubio (Senator- FL), Susana Martinez (Gov-NM), Brian Sandoval (Gov-NV) and let's not forget Nikki Haley (Gov-SC) and many, many others. The idiotic narrative floated by the media and those on the left that: being for limited government and for individual liberty means that you're a racist; or in more political terms that being a Republican means you're a racist -- these narratives are going to take a big hit this year. We just need to build on it in 2012 and in subsequent years.

Also, you have to live in the district (or close by seeing that CD lines change every 10 years); want to run; have the funds to run; and feel that you have a chance to win to make it worth the effort. There are good candidates that run against entrenched candidates in black-majority districts who never get much over 10%. To many people just vote D (Dumb) because they've always done so.
