Simo Häyhä deserves a book or two as well by the sound of it:

"It was during the Winter War (1939–1940), between Finland and the Soviet Union, that he began his duty as a sniper and fought for the Finnish Army against the Red Army. In temperatures between −40 and −20 degrees Celsius, dressed completely in white camouflage, Häyhä was credited with 505 confirmed plus 37 unconfirmed kills of Soviet soldiers. The unofficial Finnish front line figure from the battlefield of Kollaa places the number of Häyhä's sniper kills at over 800. A daily account of the kills at Kollaa was conducted for the Finnish snipers. Besides his sniper kills, Häyhä was also credited with over two hundred kills with a Suomi KP/-31 submachine gun, thus bringing his credited kills to at least 705. Remarkably, all of Häyhä's kills were accomplished in fewer than 100 days at a time of year with very short hours of daylight."

I actually think that the two guys in the background are wearing the new Turkish "digital" camo, whilst the guy in the foreground is wearing their old "analogue" woodland knock-off.

If history is any guide (i.e., it usually is!) then we should all remember that the cartridge defines the rifle as much as anything else.

So, until the US or Russia decide to change the caliber/cartridge of their main battle rifles or carbines then I don't see either country making a complete change of platform. And let's face it, the US military still has a hell of a lot of 5.56x45mm brass kicking around (and it is also still the standard within NATO), and the Russians also still have a hell of a lot of 7.62x39mm and 5.45x39mm brass kicking around.

Of course the platform can be changed, but the military has to be really serious about changing the caliber first. IMO.

"For now, it seems that the mainstream press is more interested in pandering than in reporting the facts."

Uh, and this surprises you?! ;-)

While people sit back all smug making racist comments about the Chinese (and Chinese-Americans), the Chinese are busy buying up loads of influence in Africa and South-East Asia by offering loans, development aid, engineering and technical expertise at bargain-basement prices (and they only have to point to themselves as the greatest success story to sell themselves). In return, they're going to get their hands on oil, mineral and other natural resources that the West is going to be after as well (what do you think is going on in Nigeria and South Sudan?). That's why the Chinese Navy is now off the Horn of Africa. Laugh now - cry later.
