I lived in NY
You buy a token to the subway - and you could continue to use it on the bus (as long as you don't go the other way).
So you could get on the A line in the west, then in 96th street change to a cross town bus and continue up on the subway.
Does this sound like a great system or what?! public transport that concentrates on giving a service to the people. And to think American's are looked down at in this country...

You are spot-on Paul.
First time I came to Cardiff and tried to find the bay I got lost. I'm used to navigating, and I've done so in some EU cities and in many US ones.
Cardiff if shocking!

What is the kind of proportional representation you see fit?

As one who comes from a country with one form of proportional representation (Israel) where we have a hung parliament, well always. Our governments have become more and more entangled and small parties hold the country ransom with their small agendas. A parliament where the politicians to don't care about the people who voted for them, as they are spread around the whole country. I look at the UK political system with envy, though I agree about the faults.

I think the Americans have got this right. One house which gives each state (aka constituency) proportional representation (Parliament) and one house where each state is equal (Senate). Thus balancing the stronger/bigger states whilst still giving you proportion. Still not perfect obviously.

You must have something which still ties the politicians to "the people"... to give the politicians a sense that they owe something to a very small (relatively) group of people.

To quote W. Churchill (not the dog) - To improve you have to change, to be perfect you have to change often. Voting systems can't change, not often... but they must evolve over time.
