Also for nice sidewalks and true wide main streets. i love the Boston area for the Charles River and it's walking/running/biking paths along it, for the neat "pockets" like Cambridge, Brighton, Allston, Somerville, each having its own character. and because there IS a downtown so i can go there to feel more "city" if i want, but i can stay out in my more town-ey locale as well and feel more at home.
