usability study != focus group

for one thing, usability studies generally aren't done in group environments. they're one on one with a user directly interacting with the researcher.

the purposes are different, too. focus groups are typically earlier in the process and more about lifestyles, product concepts, reaction to features.do people want to connect with their friends? how do they do it currently? in my experience, focus groups are worthless for social products.

usability studies are later in the process and the purpose is to make sure that designs can be used by the target audience. can someone figure out how to use the add a friend feature? can they figure out how to leave a status update? are these privacy controls confusing?

Can't you accomplish this much better by taking a list of Twitter users sorted by descending follower count? There's some bias (should exclude all Twitter employees), but probably less bias than will be generated by this.

Aside from the undecipherable and slow UI, this thing is missing the first rule of online influence when it comes to sites like this: you have to seed it with the Internet Famous and have them blog/tweet about you to get traction. Don't expect them to necessarily do it on their own.

There's also something that app stores have that doesn't currently exist for browsers: an easy, almost frictionless way for consumers to hand over money. Developers can launch apps and get paid for their efforts directly.

Of course, this won't work for everyone -- e.g. charging $5-$6 a month for apps which are poor copies of magazines that sell for $1 in print.

But apps like TomTom, LSAT prep, etc. likely wouldn't exist in a free browser model.

Pink's essay on the topic is also worth reading. He goes into more depth, with examples, here: http://www.thersa.org/fellowship/journal/features...
