I do not how Europe (and Iran even more so) has any right to talk about this issue. Mr. Al-Nimr publicly said in his sermons that he is not under the allegiance of the rulers of Saudi Arabia.

Whether one likes the specific laws or not, saying that the laws of the country are irrelevant to one will get one into big time trouble nowadays, whether in so-called 'medieval theocracies' or 'progressive hippy liberal democracies' - this would be the case with a simple tweet or post, what about speeches in public places of worship that influence so many more people?

But still, if the Iraqi Army had collapsed, the likes of Sistani and Al-Sadr should have just let Iraq disintegrate, rather than open this obvious road to destruction and mayhem. The existence of modern Iraq is not and should never be so important that all of these militias need to be unleashed in order to preserve it.

Seems the Shia clergy had no problem with "separate Shia countries" when they unleashed their militias earlier in this conflict - so why whine about it now?

Ok, ISIS could become unstoppable; but as a Sunni I have to say that with the sectarian fighting at unbelievable levels, enough Sunnis will continue to see ISIS or Al-Qaeda as a better alternative to Iran-linked governments and militias, enough to keep it going for decades to come. It is a matter of making decisions of life and death in wartime, and most will not care about "who started it" or "who are the real terrorists".

"Iran’s rise has been stoked by a collection of client states, aligned governments, sympathetic and/or beholden militias, and – when all else fails – chaotic non-states that promise less trouble and harm to Tehran than to its various potential enemies."

Is this not what the USA wants and hopes to achieve as well? So for the nations/peoples in this region, it seems to be that they have to choose the client of which Empire they want to be, not whether they have any choice.
