I'm late to this one but since we're talking about this trope in other forms of fantasy, Harry Potter seemed appropriate to mention. He grows up with an abusive family and this doesn't effect his character at all. He is effected by meeting the people who killed his parents but his upbringing with the Dursleys might as well not have happened once he goes to Hogwarts and everyone suddenly loves him. I can't help but think Rowling wrote his home life to be as awful as possible so that when he discovered he was famous and beloved in the magical world it would be a massive contrast. As a child reading it I didn't think on it much but the first book is more disturbing to read now, especially as the books become much heavier in tone as they go on and Harry's abusive childhood is still not addressed.

Come to think of it, on the opposite end of the spectrum there's Ariana Dumbledore, who's entire life was ruined and cut short by the abuse she suffered as a child, and she appears in the book only as a tragic, dead little girl. I'm not sure that's much better but at least the abuse has weight to it.
