http://www.connectviabooks.com/ : Dead by Midnight: A Death on Demand Mystery

Dead by Midnight – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat ‘Henny tried to maintain a positive outlook, but she felt both irritated and disappointed. She had helped Pat find a job and now Pat had let Annie down. Henny pressed her lips together. Her words might be sharp when she found Pat. With a decided nod, she turned on the motor and headed for Pat’s house instead of home…On the porch, Henny admired some crimson begonias in a glazed blue vase. A light cotton sweater lay on the green swing. Letters and magazines protruded from the mailbox. Before she could ring, frenzied barking erupted beyond the front door. Gertrud sounded frantic. That was unusual. She was a good natured dog…Henny pulled open the screen. She turned the front know and pushed. She wasn’t surprised to find the door open. Many islanders only locked up at bedtime. “Pat?” The door swung slowly inward. Henny stepped into the small foyer. A grandfather clock ticked to her left. Gertrude twisted in a circle, her claws clicking on the wooden floor, then bolted to the living room. She skidded to a stop, lifted her sleek head, and howled, the pitiably cry high and mournful.’ After years of service with the law firm of Jamison, Jamison & Brewster, Pat Merridew had been “replaced” with a much younger “window dressing.” This all came about after Glen Jamison married his second wife Cleo, also an attorney. Cleo was much younger than Glen and had a reputation of getting what she wanted no matter what. Her plans were to first get rid of the “fluff” in the office and part of that fluff included Pat as well as Kirt Brewster, taking the name of the company down to Jamison & Jamison. Her second plan was to eliminate Glen’s adult offspring, pitching them out on their own to fend for themselves and not rely on dad and his money. And her third plan was to kill the influence that Glen’s sister Elaine had over him and his decisions regarding the kids that she had virtually raised after the death of his first wife, their mother. After her dismissal, Pat became depressed and when Henny decided to help her by getting her a job with her best friend Annie Darling in her book store Death on Demand, Pat’s spirits picked up giving her a reason to go on. But when Henny finds her body after an apparent suicide, she finds it hard to accept. That’s when she turns to Annie again for help. She knows that Annie and her husband Max are the two people that can prove Pat’s death wasn’t a suicide but instead murder. After Annie discovers a picture on Pat’s phone, taken at the Jamison’s gazebo, she finds that the field of suspects has opened tremendously. But when one of the possible suspects turns up murdered giving Annie and Max yet another murder to solve. I have yet to read a Carolyn Hart book that I haven’t completely enjoyed. Her style of writing is light, yet full of suspense. And she usually keeps me fooled until the end. With Dead by Midnight, I was at page 265 before I knew who the real killer was and why. Great job again Carolyn Hart. 2011 282 Pages William Morrow – HarperCollins Publishers ISBN# 978-0-06-191497-3 Review Stir, Laugh, Repeat at Amazon.com Stir, Laugh, Repeat

http://www.connectviabooks.com/ : He Kan\'t Kill Your Future: For I Know the Plans I Have for You Declares the Lord...

He Kan’t Kill Your Future – Review by Martha A Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat ‘one day, one of the men who worked at that cab place started driving by me in an old-fashioned station wagon with curtains in the windows. He would just keep circling back and forth very slowly, watching me. Everywhere I went, he would pop up. I would see that station wagon all around town. One day, the man in the car nodded at me. The next time, he smiled at me. Then, he finally pulled his car over next to me and held his hand out with a bunch of quarters in it. I walked over, took the quarters and continued walking to school, and he drove off. We never said a word to each other, and I didn’t have a problem taking his money. In my eyes, it just looked better in my hands than in his. I remember taking the money and going to a catering truck and buying a cheeseburger, fries and a soda. That was the best cheeseburger I have ever eaten in my life. This continued for weeks, until he finally asked if I wanted a ride to school.’ Sharquent was just one of ten children…seven girls and three boys. Around the age of six her father left her mother and his children to start his life over with another woman. Being left alone to care for and provide for ten children was more than her mother could mentally handle. And feeding so many mouths became almost impossible. But it was done by raiding trash cans and dumpsters. Hunger wasn’t the only problem Sharquent and her sisters were faced with. Their older brother decided they were perfect for his own sick desires. Learning at such an early age what possibilities go along with satisfying a man, Sharquent was able to provide for herself those things that her mother couldn’t and wouldn’t. This early education became her way to satisfy her own desires…drugs. Sharquent Webster’s story of growing up in the slums of Los Angeles was one of the hardest books I’ve had the pleasure of reading. This woman was not only mean but she became a person who had no love, compassion nor feelings of any kind for anyone, including her own self. Her children, a boy and girl, were just something more to tie her down and keep her from running the streets. Her family became nothing but people in her life that were there to steal from when she needed a little extra money for drugs. There was nothing she wouldn’t do to stay on the streets and stay high on drugs. That is until one day someone mightier than anyone she had ever known caught up with her giving her a reason to want to live and want to live a complete life. He Kan’t Kill Your Future is a hard book to read because of it's honesty. But it’s a book that, I feel, should be read by EVERY young person, adult and anyone working with children and/or drugs. It brings to light some of the warning signs that we as parents might not pick up as signs of abuse both physically and/or substance. I know that I’m guilty of seeing a person on drugs, alcohol, homeless or standing on the streets begging and think to myself “Why? How can they allow themselves to live as they do? Why don’t they do something for themselves?” The questions I should be thinking are “Why? What happened to put them in this position? What can be done to really help them?” He Kan’t Kill Your Future has made me realize that I’m not here to judge but to help if possible. Not necessarily through money but through love, compassion and kindness. So, if you never read another book this year, He Kan’t Kill Your Future is one that you really need to read. I feel this is a self help book for those of us who aren’t on drugs, walking the streets and selling ourselves in that it helps make us understand those that are. It’s a true story about a woman’s life as it comes from under the slimy rock and rockets to the highest mountains. I truly admire Sharquent Webster for her honesty and strength to write this heart retching story. 223 pages Outskirts Press 2011 ISBN# 978-1-4327-6445-6 Review Stir, Laugh, Repeat at Amazon.com Stir, Laugh, Repeat

http://www.connectviabooks.com/ : Lor Mandela - Destruction From Twins

Lor Mandela – Destruction from Twins – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat Destruction of twins, and so it must end. They are the lock, yet they are not friends. The Child of Balance can only restore. Her father the key and she is the door. The Riddle now told, the Advantiere presents, Healing begins following events. ONE comes swiftly in the morning ONE unknowing moves in haste ONE beloved through mighty fallen ONE is chosen to forget her place Elahk E Ber Lor Mandela! One through strong must fall forbidden. One made low shall rise again. One must be as these words written Then will One forever reign. Elahk A Ber Lor Mandela! This is the puzzle that must be solved to save the world of Lor Mandela. The destruction of the planet started with the death of the matriarchal leader known as the Vritesse of Lor Mandela, who prior to her death had to choose her successor between her two twin daughters. Anika had the strongest will whereas Lantalia was the kindest. Both were qualified but only one could rule. Which would it be? Little did she know that her choice would bring vengeance between the two ending in complete destruction of their sisterhood. Will one be stronger than the other and rule their world? To complicate things even more, Anika’s daughter's former entrusted (husband) Darian has swore to seek revenge upon her, her family and put himself into a position as ruler. But does he have the strength to pull it off? And then there is Maggie Baker, a 17 year old living in what she calls the most boring town on earth. When she starts seeing hundreds of tiny lights buzzing around her window, she knows it’s nothing more than a stupid dream. But when the dream starts taking her in places that she can’t identify she starts believing that these dreams aren’t your every night dreams. So who is Maggie and how does she fit into the world of Lor Mandela? When I made it to the last page of Lor Mandela I had one thing to say “NO! Don’t end now!” This book contained some of the most creative characters I’ve ever found in a book of this type. The Shadow Dwellers can fade in and out of the shadows and move at high speeds won me over. The Sybran Forest that draws it’s branches up as beings entered, were easily within my ability to imagine. But my favorite characters had to be the Shadow Squanki which is a magical creature who can camouflage into its surroundings and create portals allowing them to move from place to place. And they will do just about anything for their favorite food the cricket. This author kept me so involved in the story of Lor Mandela that I found myself thinking about the riddle and it's meaning while driving to and from work each day. So, Author L. Carroll, I’m ready for the next chapter of Lor Mandela and hope I don’t have to wait too long. This book was great! 390 pages 2010 L.
Are You Hungry? : Tripled Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Turkey and Bacon

Great minds. I just finished eating a grilled cheese sandwich for my dinner. Wish I had seen this 1st so I could have added some meat. But I did try something I saw somewhere. I toasted my sandwich on both sides, then added a little shredded cheese to the pan, laying the toasted bread on top of the cheese. When that melted and browned I turned it over and did the other side. OHHHHH it's so good! Martha

http://www.connectviabooks.com/ : Drowned Sorrow

Drowned Sorrow – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat “I wanna go live with my father.” Giselle paused a moment to take it in. Why didn’t his answer surprise her? In fact, somehow she had been expecting this. “That’s out of the question and you know it.” Miserably, she started to wash up the dirty dishes while Mark turned to wait on the customers. She scrubbed furiously, more than was actually necessary, but she bent her mind to the task, glad that she had this activity to clear her mind. There was no way that Mark was going to leave Moonlight Creek. No one ever left this place. If he ever left, he wouldn’t survive. She was sure about that. Her mind turned to several directions, looking for solutions, but couldn’t find any. There had to be something, something she could do to make her son stay. “It’s not completely impossible,” Mark said. “I warned you,” Giselle said, her voice gentle and without a trace of anger. “It’s not safe.” “I don’t care.” “I care. You’re my son.” She paused. “If I were you, I’d just forget all about it. There’s nothing you can do about it. Moonlight Creek isn’t like other places. Things work different here.” Megan Blackwood had been a reporter for national television for eight years. With a growing reputation as an authority on international politics, she was regarded as a leading light in journalism. But that all came to an end with the death of one of her two children. It had been seven months and still nothing seemed to ease the pain that Megan felt. So at the suggestion of a friend, she and her daughter Jenna would be taking what would hopefully be a time for the two of them to bond and hopefully put some of the past behind them. Their vacation was to take place in a small secluded village called Moonlight Creek. Upon arrival, Megan began to wonder about her destination decision. Moonlight Creek was beautiful, nestled around a beautiful, peaceful lake, but the people were different. She knew that life in a small town moved slow but these people seemed to move at a pace slower than any she had ever encountered. And the smell. Everything had a moldy, musky smell, even the rooms of the small hotel she and Jenna would be staying in. But Megan finally decided this was due to the almost continuous rain that seemed to fall on Moonlight Creek. And then there was the lake itself. There was something simply not right about the lake that scared not only Megan but the family dog too that had come along for the trip. Drowned Sorrow took me completely by surprise. I have to admit that I never saw the ending coming. Or for that matter, I was surprised throughout most of the book. The characters created by Author Vanessa Morgan were perfectly cast, as was the setting. This has been a very enjoyable read. But I will tell you that I will probably think twice before spending even a weekend at a small town with a lake. 164 pages Lumina Press 2008 ISBN# 978-1-60594-162-2 Review Stir, Laugh, Repeat at Amazon.com Stir, Laugh, Repeat

http://thequeenofswag.blogspot.com/ : Graduation Memories & Tiny Prints!

I wish I could share graduation memories. When I was in school, many moons ago, I hated school so bad that I decided to get out as soon as possible. I took extra classes instead of study hall and even went to summer school so I could graduate at 16 and get out of there. Now I hear people talking about proms, graduations and class reunions and know that I really missed out. A friend of mine, older than I am, went to his class reunion yesterday. They hold it every 3 months because so many are no longer living. I actually envy him, his classmates and their closeness.

His Mistake – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat “Are you alright?” she said. Her body was shaking. “I’m so sorry, I couldn’t see. You’re not hurt, are you?” She waited for a response. When none came she quickly reached for the door of the car. A hand then came up and squeezed her shoulder. He again spoke in German. His foul breath was like a slap in her face. “I-I don’t speak German,” she stammered. Without a word, he grabbed her and threw her face down against the hood of the car. She felt the motor running beneath her. He then turned her over. Even though she was facing him now, she could not make out the details of his face. He ripped her dress from her body and pushed her harder against the car. She punched at his stomach. When he did not relent, she dug her fingernails into his neck, which prompted him to hit her in the face. She let out a muffled cry as she realized that it was all over. Over for Frances Thompson, formerly Briggs. Her life, from this moment on, was to be forever changed.’ Frances Thompson, originally from London, had met and married Reginald Thompson who worked for The Times as a war correspondent. As World War I began, his profession ended up taking him to Germany where he later took Frances to live. As the war progressed, Frances found “Reggie” away more times than home. This left her doing her best to be the perfect wife for her perfect husband. And she succeeded, until she met Derek Jacobs. His Mistake has got to be one of the most beautiful love stories I’ve read in a long time. I found myself wanting to hate some of the characters along the way, only to find myself loving them even more as their lives took them through World War I and into the beginning of World War II.
http://www.connectviabooks.com/ : Erich\'s Plea: Book One of The Witchcraft Wars

Erich’s Plea: Book One of the Witchcraft Wars – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat ‘Two months ago he had arrived at Ostland’s Zeaburg prison complex and been taken to this subterranean dungeon with its smooth stone walls, mazes of corridors, little or no lighting and the constant smell of death, blood, waste and decay in his nostrils. He had been alternately beaten and tortured for hours on a daily basis. His own screams blending with the cries, screams and moans of the other, unseen, sufferers in Zeaburg’s nightmarish torture chambers. The horrors here were so great that even the rats eschewed Zeaburg, although the fleas showed no similar scruples and were an additional constant torment. His body was covered head to toe with tiny bites from the multitudes of the awful creatures. Slade would not have believed it was possible for a place like Zeaburg prison to exist if he had not seen it with his own eyes. It well deserved its evil reputation. Zeaburg also had a reputation for being inescapable; no one, in all its long history had ever escaped from its confines, except in death. Slade had never believed half the rumors that had surrounded Zeaburg before, now he saw clearly they were all true and worse. He also knew why so many of those imprisoned here died and, it was said, were glad to, death being preferable to daily life in Zeaburg.’ Einreich Gudmundson is the second son of the High King Erich. Much to the disappointment of his father, he has renounced his life as the Crown Prince of Vestland and now calls himself Slade. He will now be a member of the druids of the Sacred Grove, dedicating his life to serve Freyita. That was all before he was captured and taken to Ostland’s Zeaburg Prison. His committed crimes are still a mystery to Slade but the punishment is completely real. Only when he sleeps is he able to find peace from the pain of the beatings he has endured in his two months of imprisonment but even sleep becomes disturbed by the dreams of his father begging for his help. How can Slade possibly help his father the king while stuck in this hole of hell? He can only try to keep his mind as clear as possible and practice the training taught to him by the warrior-monks of the Black Lotus and pray for some form of help along the way. And help does come in the form of a being that calls himself ‘Trunk.’ In his dreams his father told him to follow the trunk and Slade is sure this is who he was referring to. So with the help of this larger than life ‘trunk’ as well as help from a few other unlikely allies, Slade finds himself attempting the impossible…an escape from the inescapable prison of Zeaburg. This book is full of mystery, suspense, witchcraft, magic, dishonesty, espionage…I could go on and on. The characters are colorful not only in appearance but also in character. Author Tracey Alley has written a very enjoyable book and I really hope that Erich’s Plea: Book Two is just around the corner for me to read. I’ve gotten into the story and characters and can’t wait to see what will happen to them next. 315 pages 2010 Review Stir, Laugh, Repeat at Amazon.com Stir, Laugh, Repeat

Kathy, this looks good. In my cookbook I have what I call Georgia Pea Patties which are black eyed peas made into patties but this one I have to give a try. You know what? The seasonings are what have really caught my attention. I bet these would make some really good salmon patties. Martha

http://www.connectviabooks.com/ : Web of Lies - My Life with a Narcissist

Web of Lies – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat ‘The feelings of guilt and inadequacy came all too often. Of course, I considered ending the marriage. Thoughts of breaking free were frequent, usually at night when I was lying alone in my bed. But they’d quickly be replaced by the guilt. I genuinely believed that many of the problems we were experiencing were down to my own shortcomings. I’d get angry and frustrated with Bill, and I’d let my feelings show. I’d be grumpy and ratty. I’d nag him and complain about things. He would then feel ‘put down’ and ‘unappreciated’, which in turn lead to more self-reproach from my side. I’d often question him about his past, and this visibly frustrated him. To him, my questions showed that I didn’t trust him. And without trust, he’d said, we had nothing. I had to trust him. I had to put my faith in him, or we’d never get out of this mess. If I wasn’t standing by him, unquestioning and loyal, then I was exacerbating the situation for him, by undermining him. This in turn meant he was unable to ‘solve the issues’, and so the problem perpetuated itself.’ I don’t know the stats as to how many marriages end up in divorce but I’m sure they are extremely high. But there are still those marriages that probably should have ended in marriage and didn’t. I feel that most of these “sick” marriages are due to the wife and I’m sure sometimes the husband feeling that some, if not all problems have been caused by them. If I had only done this. If I had only been a more loving person. If I had only been more understanding. The ifs go on and on. Even if divorce seems to be the only solution, many still have problems accepting the inevitable. They still feel they must take the full blame. ‘I’d been stripped bare. There was nothing left. I was functioning for the sake of my children, yet I was barely there as a person in my own right. I was losing control, and I saw no way of regaining my life. I wasn’t worthy of my children. They deserved better. I had brought this all on myself. I was being a victim. I lived to be a victim. I could never be a strong and beautiful person, because I was weak and pathetic. I’d allowed this to happen to me because of the type of person I was. I was looking for misery. I wanted misery. I must be craving it, and now the universe had delivered it. Misery. It was no more than I deserved.’ May of us go through bad marriages. I’ve been through a couple myself and as I read Web of Lies I found myself relating to Sarah’s life, feelings and self-disgust. If those of us who have been there will be honest with ourselves we can honestly say “been there, done that.” We find reasons to keep us in a “sick” marriage…kids, money, even not wanting to be accused of being a failure. But in the end, we are very possibly become a victim of a form of mind control. In Web of Lies, Author Sarah Tate puts her own life out for public view. Throughout the book she expresses her self-loath and sees herself as a weak, pathetic person who deserved everything she went through. I personally see her as an extremely strong person. I can’t say how much I’ve enjoyed reading Web of Lies, not as one would enjoy a novel but as one would find while reading a book that seemed to really hit home for them in so many ways. 292 Pages ISBN# 978-1456516680 Review Stir, Laugh, Repeat at Amazon.com Stir, Laugh, Repeat

Are You Hungry? : Gourmet Tuna Fish Cakes

Kathy, these look so good. I've made tuna patties before and love them. I want to give you one to try. I made salmon patties using a recipe for crab cakes substituting the salmon for the crab. They were moist and so good, plus they were baked instead of fried. Martha

http://www.connectviabooks.com/ : Mysteerie Manor

Mysteerie Manor – Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat ‘She let out a big sigh of relief when she felt the keys and picked them up, dust and dirt clinging to her hand. She hoped that was all, thinking that spiders and bugs of all sorts inhabited basements that were left for years. She didn’t want to start a collection now, she chided to her unconscious. Heart racing, she quickly pulled herself up and clumsily made her way toward the door, where some early evening light still shown through. Stumbling over miscellaneous items, she tried hard not imagine what could be there. Dead animals had flashed through her mind. Someone or something moved on the opposite side of the dark room as she made an effort to reach the exit. The light from the door helped to guide her out of the room. She was about to reach the door when it suddenly slammed shut, and then the room became pitch black. Maryanne reached out and pulled on the door, and to her surprise, it opened with not much effort. It must have been the wind, she continued to rationalize. Taking in a deep breath, she could feel her heart in her throat as she yanked on the door and made her way around it. Maryanne crawled ineptly, halfway on her hands and knees up the stairs to the yard and kept on going, not looking back. She forced her way through the brushes and back to the sidewalk, wiping off cobwebs and the like from her clothes. She would wait until daylight to continue this exploration…’ Maryanne O’Donnell has just had her first, of many more to come, experiences with the strange life that inhabits what is known as the Valencia Manor in Boulder, Colorado. With the death of the latest owner, the Manor has been put on the market with her best friend Joan Bishop being the agent with the listing. Maryanne has a degree in anthropology and history with her specialty being in the dealings of antiques so the Manor and its history are of great interest to her. She is also tossing around the idea of possibly investing in this late 1800 Italian beauty. And that is exactly what prompted her to talk Joan into giving her the keys for an early look-over before it’s officially placed on the market. As with most houses of this age, it was rumored that the Valencia Manor was haunted. There were a few moans and groans that could be heard coming from the house but after all, it was an old house that still had some settling to do. But the screams that could be heard coming from the upper part of the house couldn’t be passed on as age. Nor could the tragic deaths that had occurred from the time of construction through the death of the last owner’s daughter. But spirits? Maryanne didn’t believe in them. Neither did her new love Mario. Even after he was tied and thrown over the railing did he believe it was anything other than a living, breathing human that had overpowered him. He continued his belief until the disappearance of Maryanne. It was as if she had vanished into thin air. She had visited the Manor and wasn’t seen nor heard from again. The police were starting to believe that she just might be dead. But not Joan. She know her friend was alive and with the help of Mario she would find her no matter what it took. Even if it meant calling in a Priest or even a medium. Mysteerie Manor is a spell binding story that kept me turning the pages and now has me impatiently waiting to read the sequel. The author left the ending open for another great story that I’m sure will take us all deeper into the world of spirits and phenomenon’s of the house and it’s past history. 381 pages 2010 ISBN# 9781450503167 Review Stir, Laugh, Repeat at Amazon.com Stir, Laugh, Repeat

http://www.connectviabooks.com/ : Dylan\'s Tale

Dylan’s Tale - Harry Porter - Review by Martha A. Cheves, Author of Stir, Laugh, Repeat “Do you know what it’s like to wake up every day and be afraid? I did. I was just a few weeks old when I was taken from my mother, a tiny Bedlington Terrier puppy, all cute and cuddly as puppies always are. Being a puppy at home with my mother was just great. My two brothers and sisters would play with me all day long until we’d get tired. Then we’d curl up beside Mum, and have a good sleep. Mum would feed us all regularly, and we soon grew bigger and stronger… After the warmth and the love and security of living with my mother and my brothers and sisters, it came as quite a shock when one day, the lady who looked after all of us took me from my mother and sold me to a man, who, right from the time he got me back to his home, seemed to enjoy making my life as miserable as possible.” Dylan is a Bedlington Terrier which is known for its speed and the fact that it looks somewhat like a sheep. Dylan’s new owner decided that due to his speed, he would make a good dog for rabbit hunting. But the man was without patience and would kick and beat Dylan when he didn’t follow orders. If you’ve read Tilly’s Tale you already know that Dylan will be rescued, but it’s the hardships leading up to the rescue, the unlikely person who actually rescues him and how he allows trust back into his life that makes the story so precious. This wonderful true story had me crying tears of sadness by the time I'd reached page 3, and at the end, I cried again, but this time, with tears of relief and happiness for Dylan. If you’re an animal lover, you can’t help but love this series of “Tales” which started with Tilly’s Tale, continued to Dylan’s Tale and will soon be extended to Charlie’s Tale. These heartwarming stories will have you hooked from book one. 2011 4RV Publishing 38 Pages ISBN# 978-0-9828346-1-9 Review Stir, Laugh, Repeat at Amazon.com Stir, Laugh, Repeat
