My husband does this too! He read me every single one throughout our courtship/engagement/the first few months of marriage.

Completely honest question, here: If they scientists DO in fact have questionable mental health, then why is it out of line to refer to them as mad? Secondly, "mad science/mad scientist" is a trope being referenced--I definitely understand the sensitivity to any perceived ableism, but does this classify? Maybe I'm missing something.

(Granted, I've never read Girl Genius, so I'm not sure what context of mad they are using, but I thought I should ask.)

"Okay, so between this revelation that Judy hit Donna, and that one lesbian couple in Watchmen, was there some stereotype in 80s comics that lesbians were physically abusive?"

Actually, there have been studies done that suggest that lesbian relationships are the most likely to be abusive. :(

(The links below are from a very quick Google search, so I can't find too many comparative stats, but they do exist, if you're interested in investigating further.)

My fiance owns the enormous, leather-bound fancy~ anthologies of Sandman, and I sat down last year to read them all (finally--I'd been wanting to for years) and got through them in a matter of days. It's a truly amazing experience to read this series, and your comments about "ambitious scope" are RIGHT ON in this case. I'm super-psyched to read what you have to say!

Actually, she might have--there's a pretty amazing essay here that takes apart Harry's classlist according to the stats: http://www.sugarquill.net/index.php?action=gringo...

"And yeah, I don’t like River. I find her smug and grating. Also, with very very very few exceptions, I loathe pet names, so her “hello sweetie” schtick is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I just really hate the whole “spoilers” thing. It’s like someone taunting me saying “I know something you don’t know and I’m not going to tell yooooou” in an obnoxious sing-song voice."

THANK YOU. My fiance doesn't understand how much I despise River--she is just so obnoxious and taunting!

That said, this is a good two-parter, and I would like it so much more if River wasn't involved. :P

Honestly, I have no idea. I remember getting an e-mail awhile ago while you were reading Catching Fire, and a bunch of people were upset that I said my favorite chapter was coming up and had downvoted me, but I have very limited experience with WordPress, so I thought that was that. Would that have done it?

"The main problem I have with religion is it takes things that can be explained by science (or has been proven by science) such as evolution or in Bill O'Reilly's case the freaking tides and tries to reduce them to what *I* see as the lowest common denominator - which is "God did it." This to me is an intellectual copout and believe that it detracts from anything even remotely looks at the issue with critical thinking."

Being "religious" isn't the same thing as denying science. I see science as the rules that govern the physical universe--I believe God put those rules in place. I don't have any specific or definitive views about evolution, but I don't find it hard to believe that God would use a long miracle to make us/other creatures. It doesn't rule out that God had a hand in our appearance and function, but within the rules He created to best serve us on Earth.
