Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : What, the U.S. Electrical Grid is Getting Less Reliable?

It's the "financialization" of management. The question is now "how much profit can be squeezed out" vs. "let's make a profit by providing value and reliability".

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Netflix's Squeeze -- No Not That One, The Other One

Your assumption is still mostly right, but the traffic isn't symmetrical. Most broadband providers provide higher download speeds than upload speeds, but the upload speeds are still important (even if only to acknowledge the packets you receive). Still, considering that Netflix is number 4 on the upstream hints at the sheer magnitude of traffic (I'm guessing most of the upstream traffic is control messages and acknowledgments).

Buddhist Geeks : Discover the Emerging Face of Buddhism : A Difficult Pill: The Problem with Stephen Batchelor and Buddhism’s New Rationalists

Why are we only focusing on Dr. Tart or Batchelor? There's other thinkers out there, from Sam Harris to Fritjof Capra. Or maybe it's because Batchelor got a blurb from Christopher Hitchens?

Yeah, I also find the used of loaded terms and strawmen (the "scientific establishment") distracting from the main point. It seems Dr. Tart has his own axes to grind...

Buddhist Geeks : Discover the Emerging Face of Buddhism : The Koan of Christian Buddhism

As one might say, the devil is in the details... I'd like to add: what bothers me about discussions like this is a certain lack of intellectual and philosophical rigor; unfortunately, how many have studied Buddhist philosophy as well as Thomas Aquinas and Philo?

Buddhist Geeks : Discover the Emerging Face of Buddhism : Christian Buddhism?

But the gods, devas, etc. are/were also subject to samsara, impermanence, karma, etc. I'd say they were demoted in power and stature. Though, speaking of Zen practice, I've seen in one practice that "Buddha nature" is replaced with "Christ nature" and worship of Christ continues; it reminds me a lot of Amitabha and Pure Land Buddhism.

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : China Eats World: Commodities and the Dragon

Well, China can't make all the world's goods out of thin air... though I never quite put down China's domination of rare earth minerals as something that was deliberate but rather a side effect of their domination of electronics manufacturing. I have a buddy sourcing wood for flooring. And he's looking everywhere, especially for hardwood. The supply chain has been set up so that no other country can compete with China on a cost basis for decent quality; it's so much cheaper to ship raw material to China then ship the finished product back all over the world. I'm sure this applies to most other raw materials. Energy on the other hand...

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : Dave Barry on Death

The insight is death as the source of humor, as opposed to some kind of life philosophy. As an aside, there are Buddhist sects out there where the monks meditate for certain amount of time everyday on the certainty of death (and the uncertainty of when it may occur).

Paul Kedrosky: Infectious Greed : On Goldman, et al.: It's the Compensation, Stupid

The issue of compensation (misaligned incentives, gaming the system) dovetails with the issue of corporate governance. When people determine their own pay and metrics, what other result can be expected?

you mean top Wall Street "professionals" get paid set salaries (with "real bonuses") for having actual abilities most people don't (and can't) have? And the vast majority of managers get paid less than the star players or even above-average players?
