"Focus on character and potential will take care of itself." This is an excellent observation I think. Of course it ties nicely to your other point--without character potential is useless. So it follows that the best way to realize the benefits of potential is to begin by developing character. This seems to me to be a very important life lesson. Thanks for sharing this.

That's wise advice. I've found that projects that seem like they would take an almost impossibly long time to complete can be accomplished as long as I stay focused on "line upon line." I'm working on a project now that is once again teaching me that lesson.

I don't see how that the examples you use (Weiner and Braun publicly lying to gain trust, then being caught in their lies) prove your point (that we have become our own gods, determining right and wrong). I agree that people are increasingly unwilling to accept dictated absolutes from any authority (religous or otherwise). They are particularly suspicious of those that condemn people by category, condemn behavior that does no harm to the folks doing the condemning and condemnation that operates (intentionally or otherwise) to entrench and preserve certain categories of people in positions of privilege. But I don't see any evidence that there is any shifting sand beneath the morality of hypocrisy or public lies intended to gain trust.

Indeed, every such act has been justified by conservatives in the name of the Russian Threat and of national defense.” And in these justifications, we can see how the State has for centuries used the “foreign threat” to aggrandize its power over its deluded subjects. A timely reminder of this wisdom.

Great post. As you suggest, it isn't as easy to be consistently honest as we think. Not long ago someone pointed out to me that flattery is lying. Negotiating can be too. How often are we are "dishonest" when we answer a question as simple as "How are you?" And often, it seems to me, we resort to half-truths to avoid having to tell a lie (or be painfully honest). Sometimes it seems we have to sacrifice perfect honesty for the sake of sensitivity or to avoid being a crank. But probably not as often as we think we do... thanks for a thought-provoking read...

I was about to boldly admit a pretty big mistake, hiding my identity using the method you suggested. But even with that protection I chickened out. What I was going to admit might strike some folks as being no big deal, and it's very unlikely that anyone who would be truly upset by it would ever see the comment and connect it to me. But I still didn't have the guts to do it. So I suppose that proves your point.

I hate being asked to answer questions like that. Worst of all, I cannot recall ever being required to disclose my ethnicity in a situation where my ethnicity should matter. In the last few days I attended an agricultural expo and obtained a library card. On both ocassions the registration form required me to identify my ethnicity. Why??? I really look forward to the day we don't practice this form of bureaucratic segregation. Thanks for the thought-provoking post.
