El Chupacabra Writes a Blog : words of encouragement

something i've been teaching church leaders here in tanzania -- and trying to demonstrate and model more than i teach -- is that it's impossible to be a servant of God without being a servant of man. when i think of myself as being here to serve the local church and the people of my little town community, it's difficult to be proud or arrogant.

Chad Gibbs : Wisdom and Stature

chad, i think my post today might be right up your alley; it seems like the kind of questions you ask. and it ties in with what you've written today: did Jesus lie in john 7? he told his brothers he wasn't going to the festival of shelters with them, but then he went anyway. some would say he just changed his mind. but did he know he was going to change his mind? can Jesus change his mind? how we answer the questions on your blog may necessarily make Jesus a liar in john 7. if he knows everything, he knew he was going to go to the party -- and he willingly deceived his brothers.

i've always understood philippians 2:6ff as meaning that, in coming to earth, JC gave up many of his "God powers." he didn't consider equality with God something to be grasped or held onto, and made himself nothing, a man, a servant. so i'm voting on the side of Jesus didn't have all knowledge when he was little. rather he studied the prophets and learned math from his dad. this interpretation also goes a long way (for me) in offering Jesus as a suitable and appropriate model for life. if he was born with all power and knowledge, and magic urine, then it's harder to see him as an example for us in life... (though that's not my reason for interpreting this way -- merely a bonus).

you're right. i've never seen that before. my best (uninformed) guess is that, at this point, paul counted as scripture either Jesus' own words or even some of the gospels. thanks for pointing that out. very good to know.

but that interpretation also requires that this 2 corinthians be this letter that he was so torn up in writing -- and the one he mentions in 2 corinthians 7:8? that the corinthians were so upset about? but then there's still the additional support of the "other" first letter: 1 corinthians 5:9. or is that epistolary aorist? but i'm not greek expert; i only know what little my seminary professors taught me. just enough to be confusing, really...

tylerstanton.com : Avoiding Bad Weather

philly, you make some good arguments, and then follow them up with great practical advice. however, i'm saddened that you didn't even once in your post mention the importance of uniform aesthetics. . which is why every fair-weather fan in the country should have been cheering for auburn a few nights ago -- not that their uniforms are exceedingly pleasing to the eye. . but oregon's were bad. really bad. like nike-handed-charcoal-and-highlighters-to-5th-graders-and-told-them-to-draw bad. and then decided to put feathers on the shoulders of the finished design... because 5th graders couldn't make the uniforms ugly enough on their own.

The Everyday Minimalist : Fast Food Ads versus Reality

i lived in china from 2001-2004, and i ate street feed 6 days a week (never cooked there-- the food was to delish). but a nice double cheeseburger from mcd's was really great on that 7th day (when i was resting...).
Chad Gibbs : Raising Arizona

chad, i commend you on being willing to adopt and love a child who wasn't yours but will be. i'm not sure there's much that is closer to the very heart of God than to do this. and passing on a football game is an incredibly low price to pay in order to represent God in the life of a child, and to those around you. i respect what you and your wife are doing a great deal. and war eagle!

Spence Smith : A New Way Of Running

after a couple of ironmans, i also read 'born to run' by mcdougal. and i've also made a switch. i tried to go to completely barefoot running but the dirt roads and goat trails i run on here in tanzania wouldn't allow it. so now i'm running in a pair of aqua socks by cudas. they're incredibly minimal and only cost me about $20 a pair. here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Cudas-Mens-Flatwater-Water-... as for changing bad habits into good ones, i used to read the bible for knowledge alone. [most of modern american christianity lends itself towards this.] but now i'm reading the bible for obedience. and i'm finding that this one new habit has a tendency to change lots of other bad habits to good.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Feeling bad that you didn't blog about Halloween.

where you live, there aren't decorations at halloween of coffins, dead people, and bones and blood? but maybe i was reading more into the blog post than i should have. i figured those who "hate halloween" are those who believe it to be sinful or immoral based on its connections to the occult -- which they believe is evidenced through all the morbidity and such. it seems a lot of parents think that to let their children see blood or death is sin, and i was suggesting that it's healthy.

Christian in the Rough : Get the Prize - Signed Book, Anyone?

most memorable prize ever won: a trophy from the 'hog wild' 5-mile race. the trophy consisted of a small pig figurine glued to a piece of a 2 x 4. my home church growing up was always encouraging the youth to be involved in anything we could. so i feel like the entire congregation was encouraging me to work for God when i didn't necessarily think i was ready. i was blessed to grow up in said church.
i've considered writing the occasional blog post in swahili, but never a separate blog. it might be something i'd do way off in the distance, but not now. for me, it would be too large of a time investment that wouldn't reach those i'm trying to reach (like your group, no internet access, etc).
two of my favorite blogs are: http://experimentaltheology.blogspot.com/ http://onesimusonline.blogspot.com/ these guys both post pretty often. i'd say "experimental theology" is 5-6 times a week, and "onesimus online" 3-4. the first is a psychology teacher at a christian university who brings a very interesting point of view to theology, often addressing that which i've never read or even thought of. the second is heavier on religion and theology, from a professor of bible in kenya; if you don't like big words, stay away. when i don't get around to posting on my own blog, it's generally because of crows stealing my calamari and african police officers asking for bribes. everybody's after my stuff. perhaps God is trying to tell me something...
