When I was a CEO in Dublin, the CEO of Elan -- a company which had a history successful acquisitions -- gave me this advice: "Des, recognize that when you buy a company, you're really only interested in a part of that company. Decide WHAT part you are interested in -- is it a product line, a patent, a sales force, whatever -- decide what you are interested in, and then get rid of everything else right away. Don't pretend that you want the other parts of the company. Admit you bought the company for [whatever it is you wanted] and get rid of the rest." I've found this to be true over and over.
