Sorry, I don't get what separation of church and state has to do with bad parenting. Maybe it's because I'm an evil atheist? This isn't a religious issue, it's a bad parenting issue. Period. I didn't learn to be a good person because of religion, I learned to be a good person because my mother was amazing, fair, honest, and yes, sometimes the disciplinarian. And she managed to produce three very hard workers who don't take anything for granted, without once having to spank or get physical, or taking us to church. And lord knows I know plenty of religious folks who are atrocious parents. :)

It's a shame there's not a license required to parent. I'm about to have my own child and frankly, am a bit aghast that the only thing they check is that you put the carseat in right before they send you home to take care of this tiny little new person. I mean, there's not even a test! It's a wonder so many kids survive, whether they turn out to be great adults or whiny snivelly ones.

Because this condition makes it very difficult for the animal to eat properly, and if left uncorrected can also cause major breathing problems as the horse ages (which is painful and severely impacts the quality of life). As surgery does not have a guaranteed outcome most people would choose to euthanize in this situation - not because they are horrible people who hate "ugly" horses but because the prognosis after surgery is not guaranteed, and the surgery is quite expensive (and surgery is very difficult on the horse as well).

That would be one Doug Spink, who has spent time in jail for smuggling record breaking amounts of cocaine over the Canada border (he received some sort of deal as he was imprisoned for a remarkably short time considering the amount he was in possession of), and who has posted online prolifically about his animal exploits, including photos which seared my brain loooong ago. I'm just amazed it took so long for this to come out. He owns a brilliant world class showjumping stallion that has been the subject of a "custody battle" - hopefully this is the end of Spink's ownership. There's another news story online that names him (at king5.com), if anyone is worried about libel ;)
