Jewish Daily Forward : The Shameless Movement To Rebrand Discrimination as \'Religious Freedom\' – Forward.com

Increasingly people are embracing the notion that "religious liberty" includes the right to deny others theirs. I've even heard non-religious conservatives decry the supposed "War on Religion" and the ascendancy of the "anti-God" Secular Elite. It's a constant drumbeat that they hear on Fox, of course.

Atheist Revolution : Catholic Freethinkers?

When I hear terms like "religious atheists," I think of Discovery Institute-led evangelicals who purposely dilute and distort the meanings of words to mis-educate children, rewrite history and achieve political goals generally, to which jshaftoe refers below. A few other examples off the top of my head: religious freedom, academic freedom, critical analysis, teaching controversies, civil rights, emancipation, discrimination, persecution.. I'm assuming that ChristopherTK is using the term differently however. :) My recent post Orange County CA- What we’re known for

Atheist Revolution : Religion Should Be Like Your Genitals

The (albeit crasser) version that I've heard is: Religion is like a penis. It's okay to have one. It's okay to be proud of yours. Just don't go waving it around in public. And don't try shoving it down my throat.
Atheist Revolution : Christians Who Claim Their Belief in God is the Only Thing Keeping Them Moral

That's such an Interesting comment. I used to subscribe to the Robert Ingersoll quote: "The truth is, most Christians are better than their creeds; most creeds are better than the Bible, and most men are better than their God," but I'm becoming more reluctant to give people the benefit of the doubt now, too.

Atheist Revolution : Science Education Under Siege in Mississippi

As a former homeschooler / fly-on-the-wall witness to the growing Christian dominionist movement, I've often wondered how sacred "parental rights" would continue to be if dominionists were ever to successfully establish the Christian Nation they envision. Would secular parents be able to remove their children from (Christianized) schools in order to "train them up" in secular values and groom them as culture war footsoldiers, as dominionists are now doing? I wouldn't bet money on it.

By the way, this month I was helping my middle school daughter with her science homework. Daughter: "That's weird. We're supposed to skip pages in our workbook. We never skip pages in our workbook." Me: "Let me see your workbook... [flipping pages...] Oh. It's the section, Evidence for Evolution." Once upon a time I was relieved to see that both "macro" and "micro" evolution were taught in our district -- only to be disappointed to see the science teacher drop the ball. If I hadn't been paying attention, I wouldn't have realized that my daughter was being shortchanged. Until this problem is fixed, parents who want 21st century science educations for their children need to provide them themselves.
As a "former fundogelical" myself who became an atheist by way of Christian aplogetics classes, there was a time when I endulged in my own fantasies about "allowing science teachers to teach comparative theories." :) (Obviously I went MIA from my approved reading list for a time - tsk, tsk.) I gave up the fantasy when I realized how many "Bible-believing" Christians are *in* the schools, teaching "science" - and using their classrooms as "mission fields." Some even *become* teachers to "make a difference for God."

Atheist Revolution : Another Reason to Avoid Chick-fil-A

A few months back, my daughter and I passed a Chick-Fil-A. She commented, "Everybody at my school LOVES that place. They say 'it’s like getting lunch and going to church at the same time.'” So, even 12-year-olds have CFA figured out. Also - and fwiw - I've posted a little about CFA and In-N-Out here: Alas, he did not dine with us and we with him

Atheist Revolution : What Do We Tell Young Atheists?

I'm inclined to disagree with the suggestion to this girl that she hide her atheism, but, of course, young people all have different personalities, sensitivities and social support systems. For what it's worth, my 12 year-old atheist daughter (okay, 13 as of last month) has learned to find the humor in these inevitable confrontations. Causing commotion Yep, she's mine Two can play the game My recent post Here’s your thank you letter

Atheist Revolution : Christian Calls Islam a Superstition

re: "Your religion is a superstition." My pet theory is that the (US) Religious Right has finally figured out that, under the 1st Amendment and religious freedom guarantees, as long as Islam is a "religion," it is protected under law. If Islam is a superstition - or "political movement" (the term I've been hearing a lot lately) - then it's easier to demonize it in textbooks, shut down mosques and deny Muslims religious freedom, etc. Christians forgot to think ahead in their grand attempts to dismantle the wall of separation; now they're having to play catch-up, regroup and redefine terms to ensure that they're the only game in town. I'm waiting to see if they start recasting Atheism as a political movement. We've always been a "religion" when it served their meme about how schools are unfair and unbalanced in teaching only the religion of Atheism to children and refusing the inclusion of other religious "viewpoints." I wonder if we'll also be recast.
